Cruise Control

Electronic Guru's I need your help. I have a 98 4runner and here's the FSM picture

Now I'm running a 04 Lexus GX470 steering wheel and here's a picture of the FSM.

Notice I have 3 wires from my 98 CC and 2 wires from my 04 switch. I connected the W-B wire from the 98 to the BR 04 for Ground. Then I connected the 98 G-B wire to the 04 L-B wire. The CC turns on,but does not set because the 98 G wire is not connected.

My question is how do I make it work?

Do I run a relay?

Do I connected both 98 wires G-B & G together?

At first I connected both grounds together and then both CCS together and it didn't turn on. Then I disconnected the CCS on both an looked at the pictures. The 98 FSM has the CMS turning on the CC and the 04 has the CCS turning on the CC. So I connected that and the switch turned on, but because I'm not running the G CCS wire on the 98 it's not working when you try to set the CC to and speed from 25 mph or up

This is a fun one. I don't think there is any way to do it perfectly. What I would suggest is connect just the Green CCS wire to the Lexus wheel at Terminal 5. Then wire up a separate momentary contact button between the white/black ground and the green/black CMS wire. Use the button to turn the cruise on and the other three should work fine. I don't see how to get the on/off switch on the Lexus wheel to work without internally rewiring the wheel and that is probably not doable. I don't see how a relay would help.

Maybe [MENTION=102597]IBallEngineer[/MENTION] has a better idea.

Definitely looks like you couldn't separate the on/off function on the lexus wheel, which is what the 3rd gen switch does. The only possibility would be a latching(or traditional) relay that was immune to the resistance in the other circuits. Now those resistors may me fairly transparent(very small), and would still be activated by those circuits. In essence, if the resistance in those other circuits was measurable, and you could find a way to only switch a relay when there was Zero resistance it might work. Sort of a mechanical logic board. I don't know enough about solid state devices to be of much help though. It would be fun to experiment with this.

I remember late 80's Camrys had a similar set up. But maybe that switch wasn't momentary. I'd be scouring the yards for that for sure.

Actually, we know what resistance the CC circuit in the 4Runner is expecting to see--that info is in the EWD. It's the same in '99 and '02 so I figure it is good for '98. I have to assume the wheel is similar or the whole project won't work. What we don't know is how much Ω the sensing circuit adds to the circuit so that you could calculate a voltage.

RESUME 68Ω
SET 198Ω
CANCEL 418Ω

So you could experiment with a 68Ω resistance and see if the relay responds. I'm doubtful, but it MIGHT be enough Ω that the relay does not engage. In 8th grade, I had a set-up that could do it. Now I'd have to find a loose pot somewhere and gin something up.

I thought about it, but decided it was probably not going to work. It doesn't take that much to energize most small relays. I'm guessing the voltages are 9,6, and 3, or, more accurately, 75,50, and 25% of the voltage applied. So, is 9 volts enough to trigger a 12V relay? I'm thinking it is.

But if you or the OP or anybody else want to try, I'm all for it.

Heh. End of project. Sorry.

I honestly never thought they would be THAT different. I can't imagine how you could get that to work. Can't you just stick to the stalk switch? Is that so bad?

I bet you could probably use an Arduino to build a translator board that would sense the signal coming from the Lexus wheel and show the correct resistance to the '98 ECU. I have never built anything quite like that, but if I wanted to badly enough I bet I could.

Oh, I bet that Mini is terrible to drive. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD.
 
OK, with enough effort and money almost anything can be done. But I was ruling out microsurgery on the Lexus wheel substituting in new resistors to match the '98 ECU.

I bet you could probably use an Arduino to build a translator board that would sense the signal coming from the Lexus wheel and show the correct resistance to the '98 ECU. I have never built anything quite like that, but if I wanted to badly enough I bet I could.

What if I were to use the CC ecu from the GX470? Think that would work?

The honest answer is: Maybe.

In '99, the CC ECU is built into the actuator. I assume '98 is the same. Is the GX470 actuator and ECU physically able to be substituted in? If so, then you would have to go wire-by-wire and see if you could match up the connections. The ones that bother me on the '99 diagrams (I don't have '98) are the three connections to the main ECU and the data link connection. I'm not even sure what they do. There is also a risk that the speed signal is not compatible but that would surprise me. The others should be easy. '98 may not have had the data link.

Can you post up, or give me access to the full EWD's for the CC from both trucks?
 
You need the wiring diagrams or the Writing part after the diagrams? I have both ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM books for both my 98 and 04 GX470

Heh I have a similar problem the other way round... Running LS400 ECU and it uses the fly by wire throttle to control cruise..

But it also uses a signal to tell the instrument cluster to turn the dash light on, as opposed to grounding a wire (or giving a solid voltage) My plan is to use a traditional switch to earth the steering wheel stalk and light on my instrument cluster.. then take it from there.

For you, assuming the resistances are the same, I'd bridge the "on off" in the Lexus steering wheel, and run a separate switch for activating the cruise system connected to your CMS line.

Slightly off topic, do the Cruise equipped 4Runners have a dual brake pedal switch? (4 wires, 2 normally open, 2 normally closed)
