CS144 and Dual batteries stock location. Cleance issues?

Hey so I've been running dual batteries for a while now and it's looking like my alt is on it's way out, I'm wanting to do the upgrade to the CS144 alt but am not sure if i have the room due to the larger physical size of the new alt.

Anybody out there running dual batteries in the stock location and the upgraded alt?

I did a search but can't find anything that specific.

Can't help you but nice tree!

lol, thanks, the chunk of wood is still sitting in my front yard, i sit on it sometimes when I'm taking a break from working on my new 4runner, lol

we unwittingly used it in our annoucment photo's, wife is sitting on it :)

I'm running dual batteries with the CS144. My secondary battery is smaller than my optimal battery though. My two batteries fit just enough to where I didn't have to cut into my fan shroud. I still have a few inches to spare between the alt and the battery. If you give me a measurement of how wide your two batteries are combine, I can measure how much difference there is to the alternator on mine.

i had to cut into the fan shroud, so basically if you just made a plane from the bottom of your battery across the compartment is where mine would end up, the height distance from the top of the alt to the underside of my battery tray looks to be the biggest hang up.

Thanks appreciate the help when you get the time.

I'll check tomorrow, do you remember how much you cut into the shroud?

his battery setup is more or less like mine,

I'm still wading through the 100+ pages trying to find the alt install, lol, it should be good though if he's managed to get it to work, the only difference is i made my tray out of a massive piece of alum C-channel.

edit: doesn't list the alt upgrade in their build thread... are you sure they did the mod?

1-2 inches, but that's not the direction I'm worried about, it's the height, unless im missing something?

The alternator sort of curves so at some point the the bottom of battery might hit the top of the alternator depending on how far over your battery is. I did a quick check, but wasn't able to look closely as its dark and freezing out. Will check tomorrow though.

I will eventually go with a bigger alternator but the little tiny stock dude is still hanging in there. Not sure if the CS144 or if a bigger Nippondenso, though the former certainly beats what output I'd find on the latter for the price. CS144 also makes more sense because they're easier to find, I guess.

I've sort of looked into this for a future mod...iirc, the upper bracket remains where it is, right? The stock alternator currently sits 99.85% under the dual boxes, wouldn't the GM alt do the same? As long as the upper GM mounting ear is long enough to compensate for the angle from the lower bracket (I'm assuming there is one, I don't know for sure) then it should fit under the battery box. Right?

I found this interesting...

One of the guys later in the thread mentions the alternator hitting his oversized filter...I don't know if he means something taller like the v8 filter or? I didn't think about that aspect of the gm vs yota alternator.

That's probably more musing than you were looking for....now I get to sit back and see what you come up with and if you really can fit a GM alt under the batteries. :)

Ha, I was replying as you were looking. I will have to do something eventually, but it hasn't happened yet.

Also, I do believe in the decade I've been on the yota forums that is the most times I have been referred to as a man in one post! I'm kinda wishing I had a prize for you. :D Okay, so it was only 2.

(it happens all the time....no worries)

He is a she! Did all that work herself! On the first page is a table of contents showing which posts have the dual battery setup.

this is my concern.

the increased diameter of the alt is so much bigger i'm not sure it'll make it or not, unless i'm missing something about the mounting it looks like it may come into contact with the underside of the batteries as from my understanding is that the new alt also sticks out farther, which isn't an issue unless you got two batteries in the way, lol

i may just give it a shot anyways and see how it goes, it maybe a minute, I'm in the middle of doing a wiring overhaul/cleaning and adding a few things, so right now just gathering parts and planning the attack, lol

yeah, caught the male/female thing as i was reading the thread, lol, sorry and nice work ;)

I take it you all ready have the Alt.? If not why not give Bumper2Bumper Auto a buzz, I believe he has some powerful upgrades to the stock alt. So size shouldn't be a problem.

Just a thought....

I see what you mean @izzardking about not only the case size but also the upper mounting ear is wider. In my case so long as it clears the right rear corner and the alt body isn't tilted too far out that it sits above the mounting bracket it'd be okay. There isn't much room between the stock alt and battery box as it is. Also curious about that oil filter comment though it's the first time I'd read that one.

Now you've got me intrigued as the time for this for the 96 will be soon. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what you come up with. If I have to do this ahead of you I'll post up....the wallet's still a little sore from the r&r on the 3rd member!

Makes those souped up Nippondenso alts seem all that more interesting except for the wallet moth syndrome part.

My winter project is a dual battery setup; big three. I'll be using dual optima's, same ratings to minimize the load on the Alternator. I've been in touch with ramonortiz55 and Bumper2Bumper Auto to find out more about their Stage 4 kit. They just had a GB which ended in September.

You can purchase an OEM alternator with three or four choices of voltages, depending on your needs. There's no need to use the CS144 anymore, especially with a dual battery set up and lack of room. Here's the link that they provided me. I believe the alternator choices are in that link.

but the cs144 is only $100.

i'm aware of the various rewound units out there, is bumper2bumper price competitive with the c144, if it's within a reasonable range i'd consider it but i'm not tying to spend $400 on an alt, lol

didn't see any prices listed, seems everything is priced via pm?

i'll keep you in the loop on my end as well, if i can't find anything for a reasonable price i'm going to give the cs144 a try, i haven't bought anything yet, just compiling parts so i can work over the thanksgiving break.

i'll post up something soon as i have it sorted!

His price are listed over at Tacoma world.

130a is $210
200a is $265

So yeah if the caddy amp doesn't work, looks like you might be spending a little more for the smaller stock amp size.
