cup holder upgrades

Hey everyone,

Still a newb with my t4R, but learning. One of my major gripes is the weird sized cupholder on my '06. Are there any mods that will make this work better? I carry a water bottle with me a lot (the 16.9 oz size), and they don't seem to fit very well at all...even with the cup holder adjustment arm pulled out. When I make turns or hit bumps, the bottle wants to fall over.

I have the same problem when I place a soda bottle or a water bottle in the cup holder. Have you tried removing the center insert in the cup holder and moving it so that it holds the bottle more securely? That usually works for me when the "arms" from the center insert don't hold the bottle securely enough.

I agree !

You can pull the center section out and move it to the left or right about an inch. "Sometimes" it does make a difference.

Even doing that...I haven't been too impressed with water bottles. I really like my "new" 4runner, but that's one thing to me that looks like zero design effort went into.

Just curious if someone's found a better solution. I saw somewhere (maybe even this forum) that someone suggested getting one of these: http://drinkdocker.com/about/about.html

I use these koozie coolers I picked up from walmart for about .99 cents.Not perfect but works for me .It also insulates so drinks stay colder longer.

You know sometimes it's the simplest solution that works best! Reminds me of a story I heard (not sure if it's true, but wouldn't surprise me) of how NASA spent tons of money to design a pen with liquid ink that would work in zero gravity so the astronauts could write in space. And the Russians just gave their cosmonauts pencils.

So these fit well in the cupholder and keep things from flying around in curves? My only concern with one of these is that I re-use one of the 16.9oz water bottles, not the 20oz ones, and I don't know how snug they'd be in a regular koozie. For $.99 gotta be worth a shot!

I was just getting ready to respond to those who suggested moving the center piece - that works fine for me as long as there's not a passenger with their own can or water bottle. But the koozie thing - dang...why didn't I think of that :bash:

You know I do that too. It's a little bit difficult to get out when you're driving depending on your size and seat position. You know?

Thats a16.9oz water bottle and a12oz can of soda.Fits pretty good and as long as you drive normally on curves it shouldnt be a problem.

exactly. Not the easiest thing to get to while you are driving. Or if you are sharing with a passenger. I mainly keep spare water bottles there to use in an emergency--dirty hands, more water for radiator, first aid, etc.

Try another bootle

This is my second 4R just upgraded from a 2000 limited that my lucky 16 year old son will be driv'n. If you use it wiht water you might try the nalgene type bottles, CamelBack makes one that is 1.5 liters with a flip top that works great. Go to any REI type store and they will have many to choose from. You save money also! So far I have not found a coffe cup that fits good still searching. Cannot belive the Folks at Toyota could have screwed up this very important accessory so bad.

Drink Docker

As I think I mentioned earlier, mine is an 06 2WD SR5. I'm pretty new to the 4Runner world, but I'm assuming that they all have the same (crappy) cupholders. I ordered 2 of these and put them in the 4Runner, and they work GREAT! I'm not affiliated with the company in any way, but just like to share reviews when something works great.

I've used it with water bottles (normal round ones and square Fiji ones), fast food cups, cans, etc, and have had zero issues with it so far.

Yeah, I'm not happy with the cupholders in my '06 either. And the square ones in my old Tacoma sucked as well. Seems to be a consistent theme with Toyota vehicles.

My wife misplaced/lost one of her rubber cup holder insert in her RAV4 (current gen) so I purchased a replacement set, since we had one spare figure I try it in my 4Runner and so far it's worked out pretty well. It's low enough that I can fit a large ice coffee from Dunkin Donuts and it doesn't tip over when making turns.
