I don't think you're missing anything. All models with the locking rear differential are rated lower than the ones without it. IIRC my SR5 is rated just a tad over 1000 lbs payload.

Just looked at the manual - 1165 lbs, 835lbs for those with locking diff. Guessing the lower number accounts for when the differential is actually locked - if unlocked it can likely handle what the open is rated for easily.A payload of around 1000# seems really low relative to GVWR-Curb Weight.
Payload should be GVWR- Curb Weight so it seems like it should be ~1500lb.
If the rear locker reduces it that much, the GVWR they note should be reduced as well.
Has anyone put one of these on a scale stock just to see what it actually weighs (full tank of gas)?
Guess my ex-wife's Tacoma's payload rating makes more sense now, that was under 1000# but she's got a TRD Off Road, minivans have more payload.
I'm probably a little spoiled, my F150 has over 1800lb payload and it doesn't even have the payload package or max tow...
It's been my theory that this was Toyota's way of limiting the potential torque load on a single axle shaft when the diff is locked.
If operating with the diff open, I'd have no concerns about using the payload figure for open-diff 4Runners.
