Custom Sub Enclosure and Front Speaker Install...

I had Keith from Car Audio Outlaws in Modesto, CA work on a custom sub install and custom front speaker component set install for the week. It meant I was back driving my trusty Camry while they worked on it for the entire week, but the results are well worth it.

First, the specs:

Three-Way (!!!) Hertz Component Speakers
Two-way Full Range Hertz Coaxial speakers
JL 10w3 Sub
Audison 5 channel 1600 watt amp

The quick and dirty review: The CLEANEST sound I've ever heard in a car. Sound quality is amazing, with a warm, enveloping sound in the entire car. The sub isn't meant to win dB contests, but it's more than adequate for my situation.

I bought the 4Runner to USE its extra cargo space, so I wanted a sub enclosure that was as thin as possible. I was originally going to go with a JL Audio stealthbox, but discovered I couldn't use that with a double decker cargo system. No matter, the custom install done by this local audio shop is amazing. JL would have something to learn!

All in all, I'm extremely pleased. The quality of the custom work, including the very nice tweeter setup, is exceptional and the installer was convinced enough in the sound quality to get almost the same setup for his wife's car.

It's a staggered design - 170 watts, 60 watts, and then 750 watts at 4 ohm.

That sounds like a sweet setup for you though!

That was exactly my feeling - why else get a 4Runner?

Yes, I forgot to add that - all the doors and the sub enclosure were dynamatted.

It was just under 4 grand - made mostly of the speakers and amp, with JL Audio fuse box, amp wires, RCA cables, dynamat, backup battery, shop materials including custom vinyl, custom sub box, and JL 10w3

So I went to a couple shops here in Seattle and they want over $5k for lower grade components!

Too bad your stereo guy can't come up to Seattle to install the same system in my truck

Oh wow - what kind of components were they quoting?

As I understood it, I was getting quite the hookup - I've been taking my cars there since March and dumped a fair amount of cash. That, and I'm getting them all fat and happy at my parent's Mexican restaurant!

My installer did tell me someone who saw my setup on here from New York is ordering some custom parts similar to mine and getting them shipped out. Very cool.

Still, that sucks man - maybe the labor between here and Seattle is just REALLY more expensive?

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has seen Keith and Audio Outlaw's work and contacted him for a similar setup.

He tells me that people from Las Vegas and New York have contacted him about getting a similar custom setup!

He's hoping to get another installer's wife's 4Runner in so he can take measurements of the same area he put my custom sub in and thereby be able to make more of those boxes.

I'm very proud of my setup and very thankful to Keith and Audio Outlaws of Modesto, California for doing such great work. I'm sure whomever decides to get a similar setup will be equally pleased!

That's what it sounds like! He's hoping to get another 4Runner in so he can take measurements. I'm going to see him again tomorrow, so I can let him know what kind of interest there is in doing more than a few boxes.

It won't win any dB contests, but it sounds great to me. A fantastic addition to the low end. It's running 750 watts I think.

I've never heard the stock JBL subwoofer, so I can't compare. I would imagine the JL 10w3 sounds better though - it's bigger and made by a better company.

Plenty loud inside - more than I can stand. Outside is fine too, although I haven't really cranked it while outside. Can report more later.
