CV axle / CV boot question

Hey folks, last year I put the toytec ultimate lift kit on my 2000 4runner. I really like this lift kit! Just within the past few months I noticed that some of the ripples in the CV boots were contacting each other. At first I thought no big deal but now it looks like they are rubbing a grove in the boot where the ripples touch I really don't want to have to replace the CV boots, it's pretty dang expensive since I don't have the tools or knowledge to do so myself. The weird thing is that this just started to happen in the past few months. It has not been doing this all year long (maybe the change in the weather, I don't know)

When I put the lift on I did a 1" diff drop. Was this enough? Any solutions, has any body else had this issue?

well the good news is that you dont have to replace the whole axles, you can just replace the boots. its a whole lot cheaper than the whole axles and its actually pretty simple. you need snap ring pliers, a brass hammer and a special tool for the clamps but its really not hard. im sure someone has a write up on here
 
SR587, I appreciate the info but changing the CV boots doesn't solve the problem. I don't want to have to change these things every year.
 
It would probably solve the problem. You're old boots were several years old and dried out and probably tore with the added stress from the lift. New rubber boots would've held up.

Thanks for the info, however one of the CV axles is a brand new OEM CV axle with brand new CV boots that I had replaced about 10 months ago. It just so happens that the "newer" CV boots are the ones that are worn the most. So replacing them expecting a different result probably is not going to work.

I may try the "boot stretching" that apiki recommended. That might be the ticket.

I contacted Toytec this afternoon and they had me take some measurements. Seems I got a little more lift than what I was supposed to get I may try to lower the thing about an inch and see if that helps if the boot stretching doesn't work.

I have 180k miles on mine and the inner boots shredded after putting in the toyotec kit. I bit the bullet and put in the CVJ axles and paid extra for the silicone rubber boots - pictures here

I want to drive on the beach for striper season here in NJ (once things get cleaned up from the storm!) and I'm also going back and forth to VT all winter - didn't want to be worrying about the axles......
 
Jack08520, tell me more about these new axles and silicone rubber boots! Are they designed not to rub? How long have you had them on for and how are they holding up (how many miles/years)? Did you send yours in for a rebuild or did you get a whole new axle?
