Cv axle removal oops

I started to tear my 4Runner apart today to install my cam burg long travel kit and I think I may have missed a few steps to remove the cv axles. I removed the inner cv / boot with the spindle thinking this was the axle. I have the suspension completely removed from the truck.

I started reading and watching videos to see how to remove the axle from the hub and read about the locknut being super tight and then saw that the axle is still in the diff but it’s just the cv housing now.

Did I screw myself? Guess I should have read stuff first

All you did was pull the CV apart at the diff. No big deal other than strapping the boot back on when it's time to put the CV shaft back together. I use a 1/2" impact gun to remove the big nut in the center of the hub. I think it may be 36mm. But don't quote me.

I hope your tear down is not to far down. If you are then you may need a impact wrench to break the 174 ft lb axle nut torque and hope you can hold the outer cv joint from spinning along with the axle nut.
You may have reassemble the cv axle, spindle and disk brake back together and use the brake caliper to hold the axle while you turn the axle nut.

Hope my Milwaukee impact has the balls to bust that but.

I read it’s a 35mm. Prolly have to rent that socket I’ll get a 35 and 36

I put a pry bar in between the studs and use a breaker bar. You can do the same method off the truck but it’ll be fun

Mine are 35mm. You ought to buy it if you can, you might need it sometime when the part stores are closed or you're in the middle of the woods/desert

It's only like $15 at the auto parts stores. I just picked one up for that much.

Damn I was just there and couldn't find anything bigger than 32 mm in the tool section. The guy said they didn't have them. I guess they are hiding in the automotive section.

Single sockets yes I only saw up to 32 mm

The set I got says front axle nut set.

Any auto store will have a 35, 36mm socket (Oreilly's, napa, AA). I think I paid $5-6. OEM was 35mm, the axle I replaced had a 36mm nut.

Wasn’t to bad, put the spindle in a vise and used the thundergun and a 35mm socket and the nuts came off easily.

Next is pressing out the upper ball joints and having to rig something up to hold the spindle up so I can use the shop press to press them out
