CV axle socket size?

Is it 36mm or 35mm? I don't have either in my socket arsenal and don't want to buy both.

Anyone have good success with CV replacement from Napa, Advance, Autozone etc.? The $265 plus $70 core refund charge the local dealer is asking for a remanufactured CV is too much $$$ in my book. :wow2:

35mm on my 96 4x. The nuts that came with my POC O'really axles were different size- I just re-used the old ones.

I would get the 36mm. It will work with the 35mm nut but will work with the new hardware that you get with axle.

Plus 36mm is more common size found on a lot of other cars and trucks.

35mm cheap and easy to find. Every cv nut i have seen on out 4runners are 35mm. I know a 36 mm will fit, but your supposed to torque that down to around 140 ft Lbs. You should have the right size

Supposed to be torque down to 174 ft/lbs. 36 mm socket will still torque down correctly.

I wish mine had been a 36mm, that was a socket I had. I don't feel comfortable with ill-fitting sockets. Oh well, at least I'm covered if the 99 turns out to be a 36mm.
My 35mm was on the oem cv shaft, not aftermarket.

I replaced mine couple of weeks ago, it was from Advance Auto some GSP brand for $99, I also used in store pickup and used a $30 of $100 coupon and it ended up being like $74ish with tax...... I will get the OEM rebuild and keep as a spare as suggested in some other thread

Also the socket is 36mm 6 pts, I used a 12 point but it worked

I keep an eye for deals at slickdeals, too bad the link below expired yesterday, I bough the NGK wires, plugs, and bunch of her stuff this way too, I know the guy at the counter pretty well and he was surprised and asking where did I get the code

Both, the stock may have been 35mm but I used the aftermarket nut to figure out what size socket I needed so maybe like Slingtoe said the 36mm socket worked for the 35mm nut :shrug:

Every one that I've seen has been 35. That's what I have and it has worked on my OEMs, some Superior brand CVs and also 2 Napas. You'll run a higher risk of stripping the nut using a 36. I think you guys will find that a 35 will work on yours too.

My neighbor thinks he has a 36mm, so if that fails to work, I'll just go out and buy a 35mm socket before I tackle this project, by the end of June.

It looks pretty straightfoward. I have done a couple of CV replacements on Camrys, Accord, and two Legends that were not too bad.

I did find that Napa (closest to me) sells one for $130, but in returning the core it will only cost about $80 in the end. That Advance discount is something sweet though.

The correct size is 35, I use a 36.

I actually just broke a cv today, now I'm off to change it! hahaha I've lost count of how many I've broken.

Wow thaats steep. my local napa has new ones with no core for $90 or remanufactured units for $60 and you have to give them a core. Weird that they are different prices. I found a 35mm at autozone

The high prices are due mostly I think to having too many space cadets or mornons being employed to due nothing more than walk around the store. Not all stores are like this, some are quite good (local Autozone) in our county, but the majority are awful. The local Oreliys here lets their female employees walk around in bikins in the latter part of the day after they have been to the pool or beach, just as long as the bottom is covered. It is not all that appealing, unless you've downed a six pack or more.

I found a GSP CV from the local Advanced and it will be $68 with no core charge applied. The parts counter guy told me their computers call for a 36mm socket so we shall see. I think this will be the one for me.
