CV Axles Part Number

Folks, my passenger side cv boot is torn and driver side is about to leak.
complete cv boot kit from stealership is about $109 and about $250 labor from the shop I use. I figured, i might as well replace the whole thing with after market cv axles which might run me about the same as cv boot kit from stealership.

I read on other post folks have got cv axles from RockAuto Auto Parts, what u guys think, should i pull the plug on after market cv axles or keep original and just change the boots. what is the part # for rockauto cv axls (complete both sides)?

I am going through the same thing. FWIW, my total coat will be under $200 in parts to replace both CV half-shafts and new seals. I am getting my CV's at NAPA locally for $65 each (after core). Seals were @ $32 at the dealer. I am not having to replace diff oil though as I just dis that so I will use a clean container and re-use.

I went over both options and decided replacement was my best option...especially considering my truck has close to 120k miles on it.

Why would you risk putting contaminated gear oil back in when it cost very little to replace?
 
Not sure how the oil in the front diff would be contaminated. The CV boot tear would not contaminate the front diff.

The only way I see it would get contaminated was if he used an dirty container to drain it into.

ETA : The second pic, looks like the band is missing completely. Unless it is torn as well, you should be able to just replace the band on that one.

I intend to change the diff oil on both diffs when I change the cv's. Labor cost is not that much different, should i replace both cv's or just replace the missing clamp on driver side even though grease is starting to come out?
 
I just did mine and used Cardone Select part number 665235. It shows the same number for your year. It's the same part at both sides, so you need 2. Bought mine on RockAuto. No core with the Cardone part.

For a mere $45 per side, I'd just swap out the whole CV halfshaft in lieu of just doing the boots.

A fleet repair shop near my work quoted me $280 just for the parts and later confirmed they were going to install the EXACT same Cardone part number. :)
 
Just to clarify...the CV oil I plan to reuse is two weeks old and has about 150 miles on it. If it had been a while, I would replace.
 
Are you draining the diff just because you don't want to loose a drop? Without draining, I had only a very small amount leak out (about a cup or so). I would have only needed to top it off when done.

Ironically though, only a week later I drained all the diffs and filled with Mobil 1 :)

if you work on one side at a time, you may be able to prevent any oil coming out.
jack up ONLY the side you're changing.

How is the quality of those shafts? I need to replace both of mine as well and this is the best deal I have found.

Funny, I just called Toyota of Richardson, TX Stealership to get the quote for cv boot install and I am being quoted $850 for both side install with alignment :wtf:

soundstudio315, your local toyota shop might be a 'not for profit' joint..lol

Both side complete cv axles from rockauto are running about $115 with shipping and the shop i use would do it for 250 labor. I guess am swinging this way...
 
They seem fine. Nothing about them looks cheap, flimsy, or weak. The shop I was going to have do the work is a fleet garage that doesn't seem to use the "cheap" parts. They told me directly that the Cardone Select is the exact part they were going top use down to the part number.

When I was on Rockauto looking at shafts, I almost splurged and went with the Empi brand (which are about double the price of the Cardone). But eventually went with the Cardone to save cash.

Alignment? No reason to align it after halfshaft replacement since you're not changing the angles of anything. You're simply popping the tie rod end out and you do have to pull out the lower 2 bolts that hold the spindle to the lower arm...but again, this isn't changing the angles of anything. Should bolt right back up where it was. Thinking maybe they were "throwing that alignment in there" to make the $850 seem like a better deal.

^This is exactly what they are doing. Its a racket! They will perform this magical alignment, and guess what it will be just like you dropped it off; aligned. They are just hoping your not smart enough to know better. That would cause me to take my business elsewhere. Shisters
 
Not that it needs changed with the axles...just that some of the diff fluid can leak out after you've slipped the shaft out of the diff. Also, it's a good time to do it anyway if you're running on older fluid. If you need to top-off from leakage on the R&R of the shafts, might as well drain and refill with new synthetic :)
