CV axles

I need to replace both cv axles on my 2000 sr5. I just bought the runner and it has over 250k on it. Did not realize this until I did a carfax on it. The vehicle runs great and has a pretty extensive maint record showing on the carfax. My problem is the passengers side lower boot is torn in half with evidence that the grease came out several thousand miles ago. No noises from the front end yet. I would like replace both CV's but am not sure after reading many threads here that there is a solid manufacturer to go with. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Toyota CVs are always a good choice but are on the higher end of the price spectrum. Or if you don't mind replacing them more often (really just depending on use and abuse), an aftermarket one with a lifetime warranty will do just fine and has the potential to give you another 250k miles. I have two aftermarket CVs in right now, one from Autozone, because I needed one right away, and one from Rockauto, because I was broke and they were cheap. both have lasted over 10k miles so far and have taken me through the same places I broke my last two a few times. I think you can also spend a ton of money on some Lotus axles, or put a down payment on house depending on which you need more.

I think I will hold off on the lotus axles lol. I had read in a post that the dealership axles were now aftermarket, not sure if this is true.

I got mine off of parts geek .com real cheep. I have heard a lot of people hate that place though. I suggest NAPA their parts are good. Remember the CV axle is there to break befor you do real damage to more expensive stuff, so dont sweat the delima of super expensive high quality. Also its not a hard job to replace them.

Thanks for the input guys. Gonna hit NAPA/ Central today. Hey Sully what part of VA beach are you from? spent 4yrs at Ft Eustis in the early 90's. Is the boathouse still open?

cv

picking up 1 from NAPA in the morning. I see the 4 bolts on the LBJ then tap out the shaft from the spindle. My only question is will the shaft just pry out from the diff ? Other post mention a snap ring. I'm fairly mechanical, did my own lift and tundra break upgrade but have not tackled cv's before.

It will pry out. Getting the new one in is harder than getting the old one out in my opinion, but both are simple and easy.

I dont know if you have done the swap yet but I'm pretty sure you have to take the outter tie rod off as well. So you will need an alignment. The nutt holding the spindle is pretty big. (36mm I think) You will also need a pry bar.

yeah Ive been here in Va Beach mostly for 12 years, and no the boathouse is gone, hurricane back in the earlie 2000's. I saw 50 cent there with Jay Z.

I just had Toyota replace both CV boots on the passengers side front axle. The inner boot was leaking from the clamp. Boot wasn't torn at all. I have a CPO Toyota Warranty for 100k miles. Took it in and Toyota just replaced both boots on the axle. Total cost billed to Toyota NA was $260. This is to give you an idea how much it would cost Toyota just to replace the boots.

You can buy a reman unit at Napa for $100 and change yourself.

I have more confidence changing out the boots only on my OEM axle than buying a lesser quality reman axle.

I dont know if you have done the swap yet but I'm pretty sure you have to take the outter tie rod off as well. So you will need an alignment.

As long as you don't change the length of the tie rod by rotating it there's no need for an alignment. Put it back together the exact way it was when you took it apart.
