Is there any way to tell if the remanufactured axles from Napa and other big chain stores are OEM vs. new cheap parts that have failed and then been remanufactured?

Not sure if there is a way to tell, but here is an option if you're looking to replace.

Whatever you do, don't buy CV axles from NAPA (Cardone). Their limited lifetime warranty is a joke. 3 out of 4 clamps came off within 10 months of replacing and now I have to re-band it myself.

I and several others bought our's from RockAuto for CHEAP!! And, we have all abused the hell out of them with no issue's. Several rock crawl on them and everything.
Opinions are like *******s, everyone has one. You'll get 100 different answers with a question like that and I'm sure anytime now somebody will say that only OEM is proper and the best.
For $42 on RockAuto, i'll take my chances. I can replace them several times and still be cheaper than stock. lol My tires/rim combo break the scales at 108lbs each. Those, my V8 and heavy right foot haven't been able to break them yet. Been over a year now.

I see 4 different brands on rockauto, can you share which ones you are using?

To be honest, I forget. I bought the cheapest ones. I will look through my receipts and see if I can find which one it was.
I bought the A-1 Cardone remanufactured version off of RockAuto thinking that I liked the idea of a remanufactured OEM better than a new off-brand. It didn't come with a seal/dust shield on the inboard side. Mine was too far gone to pull off of the old axle and transfer to the new one and nobody sells that part by itself. I put it in anyway because I needed my truck back. It was apparently defective because it chewed through two brand new axle seals in less than a week. In the end, I really regretted buying that one because of the headache with the dust shield, the two chewed up axle seals, and having to return mine for the core charge.
A week after buying it I bought one of the new A-1 Cardone Select versions off of RockAuto. It was cheaper, there was no core charge, it came with all the right seals, and it hasn't torn up any axle seals.
Counting the installation of the newest axle and seal I did the CV shaft replacement on three consecutive weekends. I'm guessing that puts me in a pretty good position to give advice. Get the new A-1 Cardone Select. It's fine for what it is. Since you won't have to return your OEM axle to reclaim the core charge you can buy a rebuild kit from Toyota for cheap, rebuild it at your leisure, and then have it ready when and if something ever happens.
Oh, and P.S., when you place your order at RockAuto, buy two or three axle seals. They're inexpensive and they like to go in all cockeyed. It's handy to have a few just because the probability of installation failure is fairly high. It always sucks to have the truck up on stands, botch a seal installation, and then have to find a way to the auto parts store to buy the same seal you just screwed up for three times what you paid for the first one.

This is great info. I'll be tackling this sometime in the next few weeks. Looks like partsgeek has the better price right now with shipping. Was contemplating Napa, like the thought of being able to take it and swap out if something goes wrong in an afternoon rather than ship, but with a new one i can always rebuild like you said.
Aside from the CV half shaft, what seals did you purchase?

So a word to the wise. Do not buy the reman'd. Just buy the new one on RockAuto. I actually think they may be cheaper...You want to go with the one where you can pick the heavy duty boot. Reason I'm saying don't buy the reman'd is because they will not come with the axle end seals (the seals at the diff and the hub) The dealership will bend you over on the one at the diff and you are going to be screwed for the one at the hub because they wont even sell that one to you. And if your car is anything like mine the stock ones that are on your current axle are all crusty and not worth saving. Trust me learn from my mistakes and go with the new axle.
I went with the National brand. They've always done me well. I believe it was part number 710596.
Check that number before buying it though. That's the number on the seal that I have in my garage but there's a small chance it's left over from my old Tacoma.

Thanks for all the replies here. I'm not sure if this thread has helped me or confused me more though. Some people saying avoid Cardone and others saying they are just fine. I've also read Napa new are the same as Cardone. In which case it would be easier to return and get replacements from Napa if they are defective.
