CV axles

I purchased CV axles from Napa April 2020 to replace my OEM ones due to the Boots splitting. The vehicle only saw maybe 20K miles from 2020-2024. I noticed the inside boot split at the band on both shafts.

I told them about it and they are replacing them under warranty. I was sit to do a bunch of maintenance to include new brake calibers and struts anyway, so not to much more to replace the CV shafts again.

I was a true believer and sprung for rebuild kits from Toyota that included grease, two types, clamps, and a boot. Check wheel bearing and transmission seals, and wheel bearings while there. On our 07 did one five years ago, and one last summer. I had the tools for the clamps so why not.

Thanks. I did install new hubs when I put in the new CV axles in 2020. I'll take a look at them to make sure everything still looks ok. I have quite a large list to do. Hope we can have some warmer weather soon to get the garage warm.

Really need to check and service the car to determine where to replace. Your sharing is really great.

I rebuilt mine with the toyota kit and used metal worm drive clamps vs. the toyota zip tie things.

Aftermarket CV axles (not including CVJ) typically use rubber boots on both joints, unlike Toyota which uses a plastic/nylon boot on the hub end which rarely fails.

If your inboard boot is failing at low mileage, check your ride height and the angle of the axle shaft as it leaves the inboard tulip joint. In my case, the front springs had sagged quite a bit and the axle shaft was angled upward enough to cause the inboard boot ribs to rub against each other. Replacing the springs (and strut cartridges) brought the axle shaft back to near straight between the tulip joint and hub...no more failed inner boots.
