So I'm in the process of replacing my cv axles after tearing both boots on mine. These have 175k miles on them and I figured it would be best to take the opportunity to put something newer in to avoid problems down the road. Through research decided to stay away from anything aftermarket. That left me with the cvj route, oem from the dealer or oem used from a local yard. With the upgraded boots, shipping, core return, etc from cvj the total would have been a whopping $400 canadian pesos for each side. New oem from dealer were $550 each. Used oem off an fj with 80k miles from a local yard....$75 each. That was an easy decision.
The boots on these used cv axles are still in fairly good shape, no tears, no leaks but now that I have these in hand and don't have to take my daily driver out of commission for the repair, I thought I would see what's out there to improve the life of the boots. There are silicon boot options out there and a "boot slide mod" I've read about for 3rd gens. Question is do we have anything out there like the 3rd gen boot slide mod for 4th gens? Mine tore on the inside boot, right between the clamp and the first rib. So if I put on new boots, whether it be silicon or oem with a boot slide mod, I figure I could get 100k out of these used CVs for around $150 in parts total.
