CV boots ripped?

Hey guys, my 04 4runner hit exactly 90k today, and just for the heck of it, i took it into the shop (I'm in a vocational school for automotive service.) I put it up on the rack and saw that my driver side inner cv boot is ripped. How many of you guys have had this happen? It isn't a big deal since i can get a reman for about 50 bucks, and labor is free for me, but I don't have any lift at all, which is why i was wondering how many people have cv boots that have ripped. I can't just put another clamp on either, its ripped to the point where i can't clamp it, i'll upload pictures later tonight!

I'd say that is pretty unusual. Mine started spurting grease after a lift because the clamps loosened, but I've yet to get a tear.

Let me take a guess, it is ripped on the inside boot, small diameter clamp area, just behind the clamp? For some reason they tend to rip around that spot. I would check your other side to make sure its not far behind, they tend to wear out close to each other from what I have seen.

Its not too bad to replace them or as you said get re-manufactured units.
 
Both my inside boots were ripped when I bought mine...Click on my name I have a decent write up on changing cv's. Mine was ripped on one of the ridges if that makes sense...
 
Don't which one's are better but orielly's has brand new ones for the same price as reman ones. I just replaced mine
 
Pretty common problem. Almost right up there with frozen calipers. I replaced just the boot. It was pretty simple but messy!
 
Mine were both ripped when I bought the truck as well. Nearly 10k later they're still ripped because I've not bothered to replace them. I've got no idea how long they've been that way, and I likely won't mess with them until they start clicking.

EXACTLY where its ripped! I thought so, iv'e done 2 other cv axles on another 4runner that was a 2005 while in the shop, exact places as well, as for the other one, i believe its on the verge of tearing as well, so i figured i'd get them both done in one time! Thanks for the input!

I sure will! I've replaced 2 sets on other 4runners that were brought to our vocational school! Sure glad I volunteered to do that job, nothing bad when you have the right tools and shop AIR and a lift! It makes life so much easier.
 
I just replaced my axle shaft on the driver's side, it ripped on the inside joint as others have said, but practically in the middle of the boot, not near the clamp. I drove it with the torn boot for the better part of 4 years/~25k miles. For some reason, none of the auto parts stores I use carry split boots, and I figured a reman would be less hassle if I was going to have to take it all apart anyway.

Despite that, it was still in pretty good condition when I finally pulled it, the grease didn't have much contamination and the joint still felt tight. I thought it was the cause of the clunking noises I heard from the front, but it wasn't (the noise persists, probably a bushing) and I probably could just wash the joint off, re-pack it, and reuse the shaft.
 
Does anyone know if there's been a video made showing how to replace the CV axle? I think i might make one since I have access to a proper lift!
 
This happens often on front pulled, half shaft vehicles. I tend to think it has gotten better. My 4runner is WAY more reliable in the boot area than my old 1989 Subaru. That think ATE boots and CV joints, and it was no where near as aggressive of a stance.

The only thing annoying is a simple rip requires pulling the whole dang thing. Oh well....
