CV Install Ooopsie

Replaced my 23 year old driver cv because the inner boot tore. I had replaced the passenger a few months earlier so wasn't expecting too much headache.


Man the driver side angles are tight, not alot of room and I apparently nicked the boot driving the axle in. (that or it was shipping damage)

Anyway now new grease is flinging out

Problem is the new cv is tapered where it goes into the diff housing so there is no lip to pry from. It's basically flush with no gaps or a place to wedge/pry from.

Any suggestions?

Some 4Runner and Tacoma guys have had success with this lasso. The lasso might grip onto the tapered area you described. I've never used the lasso but I plan to test it out the next time a pull an axle because it seems like a good trail tool. That sounds like a poor designed axle to not have the lip to pry from. I actually use the same lip to drive the axle in because I don't like the idea of pounding on the threaded axle end.

Are you talking about the trakmotive (Napa, oreilleys, etc) axles with the cone shaped cover?

If so you can take a small prybar and tap where the cone shaped cover meets the lipped dust shield. The dust shield will pop off with fairly little force and you then have a solid flat surface to pry from at the end of the cover. Dust cover taps back on easily, just be sure not to bend the lip. Hope that helps
