Dad wants a 5th gen

The interior of our 2007 limited is still in great shape.
Looks and feels new except for the driver side bolster cracking (common issue when people don't use the running boards to get in and out) and don't treat the leather as it dries out. (bought it used this way)
Also the silver plastic trim pieces ont he doors are scratched to hell (common also) but I think they fixed this issue with the 5th gen's limited interior using different materials.

Not sure if the 5th Gen limited interior is all leather or softex trimmed with leather. All Softex may prove to be more durable over time in the TEP and easier to care for with Mothers VLR.

I'd say it'd be hard to go wrong with a limited for his use. The XREAS ride is real nice for onroad purposes.

I often wondered what a 4runner with Xreas and kdss would drive like even though I know it's not possible or available.
 
If you and your Dad have some cash - and I am being serious here - and he likes GM products, check out a Tahoe.

I rented one a couple years back and yes, I was impressed.

They are hugely expensive new (the one I rented had a sticker of $67K back then) but I will give the truck kudos. A year old and you will probably be looking at $15K off sticker.

Don't get me wrong - I would rather slide down a slide of razor blades into a pool of ammonia than own a GM product, but I have to say that Tahoe was not bad and got 23 mpg doing 95 on the highway to Vegas.

Just food for thought.
 
Limited, if he wants the full-time 4wd, that would be the deciding factor. That plus it has the ventilated leather seats for the hot ass Alabama summers. My softex isn't too bad down here in Florida (better then any other pleather and most leathers I've had in cars) but my swamp arse would love some form of ventilated seats!

Also the redwood leather option is really upscale looking, especially with Mag Grey, Black or Blizzard Pearl Exterior.

The x-reas is very nice for handling (test drove and almost convinced me to spend the extra 6K combined with the FT 4wd) especially since I doubt he will be ripping it out to throw on some sort of Icon Stage 7ish suspension. For a stock full-time 4wd vehicle there aren't any as reliable and off road/poor weather conditions (rain, snow etc.) capable as a Limited trim 4runner for the price.

The newest versions of the Tahoe and Suburban are super comfy and a pleasant drive but aren't as reliable as in the past. Their reliability has been in the shitter this generation...everyone wants a 6 or 8 speed...ain't working out too well for GM or Jeep in terms of reliability.
 
I went through this same thought process a few months ago. The limited interior is not that much different than the other trim lines. The leather makes the seats look a bit better than the SR5P or TEP and the Redwood color is nice. The dual zone climate control is nice and has electronic display. That is about it visually. The outside tries a little to hard to be upscale IMO and comes off looking a little worse than the other models. If he has no plans to really off-road the vehicle and likes a finer interior then I would go off lease GX460 for sure.

We buy Tahoes for SUVs and Tundras for pickups at our company and while they both are nice, we have to get rid of the Tahoes at 150-200k miles and they are ragged out and the Tundras go 300k plus and pull as hard as they did when new. These are extreme mileage uses but it speaks to the overall construction and company philosophy. A couple year depreciated Tahoe is a stupid good buy though.

Yeah I was basing my recommendation on OP's statements that:

1) Dad
2) GM guy

I have known many older guys of WWII era that wouldn't piss on a Japanese vehicle if it were on fire. It's the time they grew up in.

I've long ago given on trying to explain to them that on a bad day, Toyota & Honda (specifically - I thing Nissan's are complete junk) are 3x the vehicle Chrysler/GM produce.I think Ford is definitely in the competition but I drive a 4Runner, not an Explorer for a reason.

So, was just saying I drove a Tahoe on a 3K mile trip and liked it, but there is a new 4Runner in my garage, not a Tahoe.

However, if Dad is a GM guy to the bone, it's hard to change that. ;-)

The gap is not so extreme with the refresh. When I bought my '12 Limited there was a pretty stark difference between the SR5/Trail and Limited Interior. That's not really the case anymore. It's mostly creature comforts like push-button start and full time 4WD that set the LTD apart these days.

Given that your dad is in AL, the cooled seats in the limited may be of interest.
 
Here is a question worth considering...Is an SUV a requirement? If not, then the whole ballgame changes with lots of options.

Does he have the option to keep his current vehicle and add something like a pre-owned Stingray...pure retirement fun.

Screw the Corvette. I just bought a Polaris Slingshot this week and it is 10x more fun than any sports car I've ever owned including my Corvette and 911.;-)
 
LE is only way to go for Dad - doesn't need to even look at SR5 or TE. There are no trim levels etc on LE - only options are 3rd row seat, auto running boards, and sliding rear deck. Everything else is dealer installed - I had remote start added.

Agree with previous - he should drive Yukon and LE - guessing he'll like Yukon better - is Yukon worth the additional cost, probably shorter life, and definitely more depreciation. If $$ not consideration, then a Land Cruiser for sure.

This. There are some slamming deals out there on lightly used 200's. The seats on my TE aren't great comfort wise, not sure about the LE. But the 200 is super comfy.
 
Another consideration: How old is dad and how many more years will he want to climb into his Limited 4R?

Made in Japan: 4Runner. Prius too, right?

With dad in Alabama, not sure where you are, I'm happy to intro you to my Mississippi dealership to be treated right. I helped a friend in Birmingham buy his Limited Tundra last year, he got a better deal than he was able to find locally.

Just a misc. offer.
 
i don't think anyone has mentioned it but probably because it's so obvious we forget about it. the back window rolling down. sounds kinda silly when i say it out loud but that was my determining factor between the LTD and a used GX. your dad will love that breeze...closest to a convertible without the fuss.
