dash center bezel questions

so in conjunction with upgrading my center console of my '96 to the cupholder one (01?) and having to relocate my rear window switch, I'm considering using a later dash bezel that incorporated the switch below the clock, like this:

my questions are these:

1. what year does this bezel come from?
2. is there and option that does not include the ECT button?
3. is there a year that does not have the additional power outlets at the bottom (I use that space)
4. how much of the ducting for the center vents needs to be changed out?

I did my 97 center console. It is easy. Nothing to drill. All nuts match up. Also, you can pull the wire out of the wire harness and relocate the rear window switch to the lower dash area near the left knee. No spicing wires!

I'm also planning to do this upgrade in the near future. I'm upgrading my 98 to a 99 dash since I've already upgraded the center console and want a better place to relocate switches.

I think the hardest part is the wiring if you want all buttons working correctly. Seems like the plugs/pigtails are the same across years but you'll need to change the wires in the plugs. You should probably grab the pigtail out of the donor dash for wiring reference.

This thread has a good write up but not sure if anyone ever got the defrost switch working or not.

1. This bezel started in 99 and ran till 02
2. Only trucks with the 5 speed will not have the ect button
3. The addition 12 volt outlets can standard on the and never came without.
4. The ducting just needs the piece that hooks directly onto the two vents. It's like a y pipe, everything else is the same under the dash.

The wiring will need spliced into the new plugs, I have the plugs if you need them. I was going to do the swap and ended up not getting around to it.

When did the 5speed option stop? What trim level? (this will help me narrow my search)

'99 & '00 of you want a 5-speed. That's what I have. That piece is also removable, so I bet you could buy a manual version from the dealer. It may be integral with the switches though, so that might be a $150 part [emoji51]
I have a video in my thread)almost most recent post) showing most of what needs spliced/re-pinned.
The defrost is the most complicated, but if you can't find the info you need, I'll take my dash back apart and pull the def switch apart too. It's the least I can do to repay you for the generous panhard brackets [emoji6]

If you don't use the cigarette ash tray you can remove it and install a DIY cubby of sorts.
People put their CB radios in that slot.

Or, (assuming the posted picture is not yours based on your question) if you have a single DIN radio, you can install a cubby as the second DIN.

The 5 speed was last offered in 2000, and came in all trim models except for limited's. So they might be kinda hard to find, there's a 99 5 speed in a junk yard an hour south of me, if your search turns up sour, I could make the trip and see if they still have the dash. Send me a PM about those plugs!

Fair question; and the answer is - my brain is filled with the car stuff I need for work, so some of the 4Runner stuff slips out of one ear when I'm not on the forum for a while - and I haven't been for a couple of months, really.

Better question: why didn't I search first?

(lazy, actually - I'd just finished putting together a big Camelback order, wanted an easy answer to the last piece of the puzzle for the maintenance and upgrade stuff I'm doing.)

I actually tried searching Camelback for the correct part number, and now have no idea how a Dealer Parts Counter guy would order the right thing...

On the JDM 96 (at least, can't speak for the later ones) there are two screws that hold the bezel in, that you access by popping the cover for the climate control off.

I think the JDM ones are also triple DIN, (space for CB) they are on the '96!

That's totally different to the JDM setup! I need to take the knobs off, prise the climate control facia off and it reveals two screw screws, one on each side, undo then the bezel than clips off. Took me ages to work out as they are "hidden". (But it looks like those screw holes are still present in your pic, just no used!)

I'll get a pic later.. - it's also the factory carbon finish! (well plastic that looks a bit like carbon fibre lol)

Edit: pic shows the screw holes only accessible after removing the climate controls.
