Dashboard

Apparently 'cracked dash' was a common complaint by Toyota owner's, if memory serves me, which is highly unlikely, Toyota issued a cracked dash recall on certain years and models? I thought a dash cover would prevent the dash from cracking, that was a major mistake.

Imagine majority of the task is removing the dash, after that seems a matter cleaning surface, spraying with filler prep, mix A and B filler and apply to gaps, sand, then apply couple coats of textured spray paint. Easier said than done??
 
Maybe for the first gen but not the second. At least not mine. I searched my vin number and only have a tie rod available which sucks since i just replaced one lol

Only because they are just not available anymore, unless they have a hundred cracks and the foam is turning brown already!

I have been looking for a non-cracked dash in any color (I can shoot it myself with SEM vinyl dash paint) and have not found one in the past 10 years now. Every one that I have found, always has a crack or spiderweb somewhere on it, or they've started to deform and warp.

However, if you find one, or two, please, let me know! I haven't even bothered looking in the past 3 or 4 years since there's never anything out there. My name and number is with several junk yards to call if/when they get one that's near mint in, haven't gotten a call yet.

Mine is pristine. It's on the truck right now but I'll pull it if the price is right, make me an offer. :D
 
Okay, let's see how pristine it is! I'd offer good money if you do have one that's perfect or near perfect!!!

Might even drive down to get it if its perfect, just so you don't need to box it up and ship it!!!
 
If you're serious, I'll get you a pic when the snow melts. Remind me again in a week.

It'll definitely have to be a price is right situation though, those things are a giant PITA to remove.
 
Hell, maybe we can do a swap + cash for it! Would hate to have your truck without a dash at all! Mine isn't great, but its still in-tact!

Went to their website and found a 'how to' video may find helpful> Certainly offer's some food for thought?? Probly cost more than the items needed to recondition the dash, not sure how it would work on padded dashes. Seems the advantage to the cap would be no need to remove the dash?

While this was about 6 or 7 years ago, a buddy of mine put one in his 60 series landcruiser. I did not like the way it looked around the vents and edges, it just looked like a bandaid to his cracking dashboard.

Of course, they could be a lot better-fitting now, but I'd rather not buy one and find out the hard way its still the same. Price isn't too bad though, if it doesn't look like a dash cover and more like the original dash.

Agree, especially when it come to a padded dash? Pretty much decided on a 'do it myself' repair, seems only requires around 3 ingredient to accomplish the project; Filler Prep, Filler, and textured spay paint, using the highest estimate figure it should not cost more than $100?

Intend inspecting to determine if the task can be accomplished without removing the dash; imagine it would primarily depend upon the location of the cracks, if along the parameter then likely require removal; if not, seems one can possibly mask surrounding surfaces to protect from the sanding and spray paint?

I have NEVER seen a dash overlay that looked the time it took to install, even if that was only 15 minutes. I've done a lot of dash removals for heater core/evaporator core replacement over the years. And on many Dodge trucks I've have to tell the owners that there is absolutely no way the dash (that is already cracked) is going to make it back in with the top somewhat in-tact. I even made the mistake of letting one owner talk me into installing one that he swore was the best you could get and would look factory. Long story short.... He wasted his money on the overlay and my labor. They are junk, I'd rather put a carpet piece over one, and I can't stand those either.

Seem to recall, from similar threads, removing the dash it a labor intensive task, thought perhaps since experience with dash removals and repairs, curious if U have an opinion if it can be done without removal, understand it would be preferable for the best results?
 
I think that would make a bigger mess than I would want to in my vehicle. No matter how careful you are, you will wind up with sanded filler dust in there.

Yeah and you don't want dust in you there. I've never done that but I did go off road with my back window down without realizing it.... Let's just say there is no hope of sitting in mine and leaving clean lol. It's impossible to get the dust out
