DD's 2nd Gen Build

Purchased my 1st 4Runner back in November and have been working on her since so I thought I would start a thread. My rig is a 1995 3.0 with 4wd, automatic, 4.6 gear ratio. Originally came with 225/75/15. When picked her up, she had a bald set of 285's on some 16 wheels from a 3rd gen. Interior was in great shape, couple small cracks in the dash and one small tear in driver's seat. AC blew cold, all power windows working. It did have a check engine light that was attributed to a leaky valve cover gasket at my PPI. I purchased her with around 165,000 miles for $900. Here she is recently after purchase.

She looks pretty good from the pic. You can't tell but about half the panels have zero clear coat and the hood has hail damage. Truck had a severe case of rear sag.

The first thing I did was replaced the tires with a new set of 285 Yokahama Geolanders, added a Vortex Rola roof rack with extension and gave her an oil change. I realized later that she was missing the front skid plate, more to come on that later. Next pick is with new tires and the rack (before I put on the extension)

Up next was a fix to the dreaded rear sag. I went with new Moog Springs and Skyjacker shocks all the way around. No more rear sag and greatly improved ride. Prior to the upgrade, she drove move like a boat. After the upgrade, she drives like a more maneuverable boat!

Then things went downhill. Actually more like dead at the bottom of a hill about 1/2 mile from the nearest road. After using a friend's truck to pull mine to the closest road, I got her loaded up on a flatbed and towed to my mechanic. Engine problems are over my head. It appeared to be a blown head gasket and when the motor was pulled, it was clear the heads had been worked on in the past. So, instead of trying to rebuild it again, I decided to go with a reman'd engine.

I seriously looked into upgrading to a 3.4 but there were not any local shops that were experienced and it looked like it was going to cost me more than I wanted to spend, complicated a bit by the fact that I wanted to keep the automatic so the wife could drive it. I decided to try for a slight upgrade and ordered a super stock "upgraded" 3.0 from Oregon Engine Builders. John was good to deal with and the new motor shipped and arrived quickly from Oregon all the way to East Tennessee.

We had some issued during the install, lots of issues with a code 52 check engine light resulting in almost now power. We tried pretty much everything, first replaced the wiring harness, then replaced the knock sensor, then replaced the ECU (anyone need a ECU, I have an extra), with no success. Finally, we tried a straight from the Toyota dealer OEM check engine sensor and solved the issue.

I'm about 1000 miles into the new engine and it does have noticeably more power than before, but I can't comment on whether it puts out more power than a new 3.0. I"m quite satisfied with it and the service from Oregon Engine Builders. She still a 3.slow. As part of the install, the distributor, wires and plugs as well as any other parts needing love, were are replaced.

I next upgraded the sound system. I went the budget route, Front: Blaupunkt GTx 402's 4 inch ($30)l Rear: Memphis Audio 15-SRX64 6.5 inch ($40); Headunit: Pioneer MVH-X380BT ($70). I now have bluetooth and handsfree calling. It works very well for the price.

Most recently I added a light bar, Aresonal Offroad 42 inch curved bar with slag factor mounts. The mounts are a little pricey but work great. I also plasti-dipped the wheel, not convinced I will keep it. Here she is as she sits now, taken this afternoon in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, just a 45 minute drive from my place.

Have a skid plate on the way and considering removing the running boards. More to come.

If you plan on really taking it offroad leave the running boards and save for sliders. You can smash up the running boards while you save for real sliders..... ask me how I know lmao

Looks like you got a good deal (besides a totaled engine..) how do you like the new sound system? Both the front speakers in my 4Runner are shot and I've been contemplating replacing everything. Did you have to do any modifications to the cubby to fit the rear speakers?

I am curious about this too. I stereo is finicky to get to work. I like the idea of having blue tooth for the cell phone

The new sound system is a huge upgrade over the 20+ year old OEM. The speakers aren't going to impress an audiophile but for the price and my needs, I am very impressed. The bluetooth connectivity is a big plus for me as since most of the music I listen too streams off my iphone. The mic for bluetooth calls also works great.

I did have to take a dremel to the rear speaker mount/plastic thing. There are some threads setting out the process over on the Yotatech forums or if you search google.

When I purchased my truck, it was missing the oem skid plate. My truck is not built to be a rock crawler, but she will see some trails and my general philosophy is that when something comes off one of my vehicles, I try to upgrade. I couldn't find one locally and ebay prices were close to $150 shipped for a used one so I ordered a BudBuilt a little over a month ago.

My skid plate showed up this week. I was a little disappointed that it took over a month to get here, but it looks great and the folks at BudBuilt did keep me updated when shipping was delayed.

Hopefully I'll get it cleaned, painted and installed this weekend. I'll be using purple power degreaser to clean it and Rust-Oleum Flat White Clean Metal Primer followed by Rust-Oleum Professional Semi-Gloss Black High Performance Enamel Paint.

What exactly do you mean by this? I've replaced my harness, knock sensor, and ECU as well and still have a code 52. What exactly resolved your code 52?

I first replaced the wiring harness, ecu and knock sensor. The first replacement knock sensor was not ordered from Toyota and was not a genuine Toyota part. What ultimately solved my problem was buying another knock sensor, the second one being a genuine Toyota part from a Toyota dealer.

For some reason, my truck didn't like the first knock sensor I purchased. It could be that I just got a bad knock sensor, but my advice is to pay the extra money and buy the knock sensor straight from a dealer.

EDITED to add that I read an awful lot of threads on the code 52 problem on this and other sites and while the OEM knock sensor worked to solve my problem, I don't think it will solve everyone's issue. The most common fix seems to be replacing the pigtail/wiring harness first. So, if I were doing this again, I would first replace the wiring harness/pigtail and then, if that didn't fix it, replace the knock sensor with an one from a Toyota dealer. Finally, I would replace the ECU (I have an extra if anyone needs on).

I'm trying to figure out my 4Runner right now. I got it from a tow yard so I'm trying to investigate it to attempt to piece together it's past. My check engine light is on but I have not had the chance to take it somewhere to get it scanned. I'll keep this thread in mind if it's a 52 code.

Did you install the Moogs yourself? If so any pointers on it? Anything you would do different?

PS great looking rig.

Quick Update! The engine I purchased from Oregon Engine Rebuilders, Inc., in June blew another head gasket today. Th new engine had just under 5,000 miles since install. John at Oregon Engines assured me that there was no way it was any fault of Oregon Engines and they would not be paying for the repairs. So, I would no longer say I am satisfied with their product. In looking into them, I found multiple complaints with the Better Business Bureau regarding their failure to honor their warranty, so I guess buyer beware. They did at least send me a replacement gasket set and new head bolts. So the truck as at the shop again getting another head gasket replaced.

On the positive side, I did get the Budbuilt skid plate bolted on. I'll post pictures when I pick the truck back up next week. I'm pretty frustrated at this point, having spent $3000 for the new engine and install a few months ago and now another $1000 for the head gasket.

Just curious... but the new head gasket, and if you see the old one... is the water jacket passage at the back of the left side head (by #6, where it always fails) just an approx. 1/4 hole, or is there allowance for the full size of the water passageway?
When I replaced the head gaskets on the 92 that I did, the new gasket had a larger opening for that water passageway on the back of the head, right by the exhaust crossover pipe. I take that as a good improvement for flow, maybe helping to cool. My gaskets were DNJ brand.
So... just curious, as I'm in the middle of another head gasket job on the 95 I'm working on now.

Truck is up and running again. Pic of the installed skitplate below, although it's not the best pic, and my attempts to lighten it clearly failed miserably.

I spent about 3 hours dragging a disc behind her this weekend to plant a couple of small feed plots to try to lure some bucks to my farm and she ran great.

I also recently have had an issue with my ebrake light coming on at random times. After a little research I discovered the cause was low brake fluid, easy fix for now, although I probably need to look at getting the brakes updated. I've replaced disc's before but never worked on drum brakes. I can't imagine it's that hard a job, but I haven't decided whether it's something I want to undertake at the moment.

No real additional plans for the truck for the immediate future, other than to put some miles on it.
