Dealer oil change at only 1000miles

My dealer wants to change my oil for free at the first 1000 miles.

What's up with this? Anyone else get their oil changed at 1000 miles?

I did mine at 1K miles. I always do it with a new vehicle, gets out any production crap. I change again at 4K miles and then every 3750 miles.

Changed mine at 1k, put in synthetic Mobil 1. Oil changes every 6-7k miles.

Hank the Mobil 1 every 6-7K miles sounds good to me and from the UOA on www.bobistheoilguy.com the Toyota 4.7V8 is very easy on oil and can run that interval with no problem. I would also do that, but since Toyota recommends a maximum of 5K mile OCI, aren't you concerned about them denying a warranty claim based on engine lubrication failure? I plan on going to Mobil 1 with a 7500 mile OCI after my warranty is up at 60K miles. The Dealer uses Castrol GTX (good dino oil) and I have it changed every 3750 miles. Just easy and I figure if any problems, the dealer doesn't have anyone else to blame, so it will either be covered under warranty or covered by the dealer.

Some people feel that changing oil early in a brand new engine is good, since there may be small metal particles present from making the engine. I tend to change the oil around 1,500 on a brand new car. There is another group that says changing oil early is not neccesary because modern engines don't have metal particles like they did 20 years ago.

Some manufacters like Honda use a special oil to break in the car and they don't recommend you change the oil early.

Wow, that's cool! Do it!

I know it's cool.
I just wondered why.
Do they expect something out of the ordinary?
My wife has a new Lexus RX330 and the first oil change was at 5000 miles. (also free).
Like everyone else with a new vehicle I'm wondering like oh my gosh did I buy something that will be having a problem.

Ciao, Brian

No, it just sounds like you might of found a good dealer. I'd worry about the Lexus dealer, since I've own 3 Lexus (SC400, LS400 and ES300) and the dealers did oil/filter changes on all 3 at around 1000 miles.

Smart dealer, they do you a service and establish a base with you to get your future service business.

I think it is just good business and mechanical practices at work there.

BTW I would not suggest going to M1 after 1k miles. Probably wait till 10k to switch over. My experience has been that the 4R still wears in till 10k. WIth M1 it might take a lot longer, but I'm not the expert on this. Just old school on engines wearing in and oil changes.

Changed mine at 650 km and about every 4000 km afterwards. Am now around 28000 km and started running synthetic about 3200 km back. Am going to see if I can make it to the next 10000 km mark. Oil is clean as the day it went in. Just keep it topped up.

(1 mile = 1.6 kilometer)

Changed mine at 1000, then switched to m1 on second change. Changing to mobil 1 early will not void your warranty. My dealer offered their synthetic, or said they would put my m1 in if I wanted. I have had mine for almost 15 months and have only 7000 miles. I change based on months not miles.

Don't you need to still change at the recommended 3750 mi interval to maintain the warranty? I run 8K mi intervals on delvac1, but my rig's 19 yrs old now. I guesss that technically, toyota would have to prove that one's neglect to change at 3750 mi intervals caused a certain problem (like the engine sludging up w/ varnish). I change based on the type of driving done and environment conditions (dust storms in the summer mean shorter intervals), long road trips mean I can stretch it out a little, etc.

Different dealers have different recommendations, but Toyota says is should be changed every 7,500 miles. I think the reason car manufacters keep the oil change high is to show that their mantianace cost are low. The 3750 might be coming from a dealer, my dealer recommends 5,000 miles.

I think the dealer changing the oil at 1,000 miles for free is a good practice. He is getting the customer back to see the service dept. and changing the oil early in the beginning is a good practice.

For the most part I change mine every 5-6 months if I don't reach the 5000 miles(mobil1 synthetic). It is good to change it in the first month or 1000 miles to get the metal shavings or other production crap out. Also a free oil change by the dealer is something I would not pass on either.

Here's a few comments:

1) I don't think TOY will mind people like myself who've upgraded to synthetic oil and changing it every 6-7k miles instead of 5k miles with conventional oil since synthetic has many advantages/benefits over dino, IMO. I could be wrong about the 5k thing, but I really doubt it. Besides, how can TOY prove that the intervals were 6-7k or any other mileage interval? Some Amsoil products allow 15k-25k mile intervals (following their instructions) with only an add'l change of the filter half way thru an interval.

2) that 3k or 3750 miles oil change interval isn't a must (in most cases, it's false). There's many factors involved in determining the oil change interval such as: oil type (dino or syn), towing, driving style, driving environment including climate, oil filter size, oil capacity, etc. Many (newer) german vehicles only require an oil change once a year or every 10k miles. My dad's ML320 has a 3.2L V6 as compared to my 4R's 4.0L V6, but the oil capacity are 8.3qts and 5.5qts (i think), respectively. He takes it in for an oil change once a year, eventhough he drive less than 6k mi/yr and the scheduled maintenance is free for the 1st 4yrs.

3) as for a new vehicle that originally have dino oil and changing it to synthetic too early, I don't think it's a big deal since most engine parts nowadays are microfinished and don't really need to wear in evenly. I understand that certain parts do need to wear in properly though, such as piston rings. However, many german vehicles come straight from the factory w/synthetic oil. My mechanic (my buddy's dad), told me that german automakers set longer intervals so that in the long run, there may be more problems and more service jobs for them. So after the 1st 4 years of free scheduled maintenance, you're on your on if things go bad which might have been contributed by not changing the oil more often. He changes the oil in his daughter-in-law's 325i at the 6 month interval, in between the annual free scheduled oil change & maintenance during the 1st 4yrs. I think the automakers (german) do this as part of a psychological thing too. Would a person think that changing the oil once a year (or 10k miles) & paying close to $100 for the service is saving $$$ versus another who changes it every 5k (or 6 months)? They may think that their vehicle is "low maintenance" if they only need to take it in for an oil change once a year.

Just my 2 cents

*side note: do any of you ever notice how WCC adds Synthec to these junkers w/many many miles on the odo after they pimp the ride? I'm not gonna go too much into the details, but I think some of you know what I'm talking about :D

I always wondered how to change the filter without losing the oil. And if I drainthe oil and put it back, I'd be very worried about pollutants.

Sorry, I digress ... back to the topic ...

You will lose some oil, but not much, maybe 1/2 qt at the most, that is inside of the filter. Just top it off. There's an anti-drainback valve that should keep the rest of the oil from coming out of the oil resevoir.

***BTW: Does anyone else out there noticed that once you open the motor oil cap, there are metal shavings in & around the threads of the opening? This really pissed me off when I first changed the oil on my 4R. I tried to remove a much of the shavings/bits w/o having any of it fall into the engine. Even to this day, I'm upset that there were metal shavings from the thread and the fact that the threads seems "unfinished" and rough. Maybe it's just my 4R, but if any of you have or don't have that issue, I would like to know. Thx!

Toyota does not make the distinction between synthetic and regualr dino oil. Also if you read cans of Mobil or Castrol sythetic they don't make the argument that you can go further. So if you use either oil do not go over the 7,500 miles that Toyota states. Amsoil says you can go further and even offer a warranty, but a person on Edmunds said he used Amsoil and went over 7,500 miles on a Lexus RX 300 and it formed sludge, Lexus said he voided the warranty and well, Amsoil warranty is evidently not worth much. Bottom line follow manufacters recommendations. Just curious, were did you get the 5,000 miles for a oil change from.
