Dealer transfers

We are having our local dealer here try to find us a '14 or '15 Trail Premium in white w/ KDSS since they were not granted the allocation for the next round of '15's coming in.

We have been looking online on cars.com and autotrader.com and found a few '14's and '15's within 600 miles. When asking the dealer, they said they can't find any but I find that hard to believe. How can a dealer not find any for a transfer when we can find multiples online?

Is it because the dealers that have some on the lot have them flagged as not being able to be tranfered or what? We have the feeling that they are not really trying and don't care that they lose a sale. We are about to get our refundable deposit back and just tell them we are going somewhere else or get it in another state.

The one reason we want to go through them is that they off a lifetime powertrain warranty on all new vehicles they sale.

most dealerships aren't willing to give up relatively rare versions, trail editions being less stocked. So unless your dealership has something worthwhile to trade its going to be harder to get a transfer

There's usually a cabal of dealers that can do a trade between each other without real paperwork because they're owned by the same offshore holding company/tax shelter.

The cars you're seeing are outside of your dealer's network of corrupt cronies, and therefore there'd be no mutual benefit for them to get it for you.

Consider bribing the sales manager with a hooker or coke.

Use the warranty as leverage and go to another dealer

it is likely the other dealers are unwilling to transfer them.
also, the lifetime warenty is not the best thing really, it is only valid only if you have them do EVERY service and repair on the rig, at the dealers inflated prices.. you you end up paying for that warrenty many times over in the end. i would just reccomend going to the dealers that have the truck you want and working with them.

They must sell other vehicles besides Toyota. Offering a lifetime powertrain warranty on a Toyota is like offering a lifetime warranty on a tree. Do a little pruning, water and fertilize it and it will outlast you. Same with the 4Runner. Check the fluids, change the oil every 10K and it will be fine for a long time.
Out of all the people who have posted in the past several years here there have been maybe three or four that had issues after the first 50K. Out of those pretty much all of them were modded, had went through hell and back and in one case (they paid for his engine) he actually broke something that should have never broke and Toyota is changing the design! So, while it is piece of mind, the chances are slim you will ever need it. This is not a Jeep, GM, Ford, Dodge, etc.

Not true.

You'll lose your ass on the KDSS payouts, bad T/O bearings on Tacos and FJ Cruisers, and the random off-roader grenading diffs.

I fully expect having to overhaul my KDSS at 80k after hearing what happened to GX owners with the same system, especially with the corrosive road salt they throw down here.

FWIW my 02 sr5 4 runner has the planetary gear go out at 120K... many 02's are having that issue.
our 07 had the trans die at 90k.
they dont make em like they used to...

I specifically asked about the powertrain warranty and he said as long as you do the recommended maintenance at or around the recommended intervals, they will warranty anything.

IF they can come through and find something I'm going to get it in writing that they will honor the lifetime warranty even if I do the maintenance.

The problem with using the lifetime warranty as leverage won't work because the other dealers around me don't have or can't seem to get a Trail Premium either. There was another dealer in town offering the lifetime powertrain but they wouldn't work with me on a price. They offered a '14 for the same price the current dealer was offering a '15 and they wouldn't come down any further so we said bye.

go to your dealerships website and look at the warrenty policy. I would be extreemly suprised if it didnt specify.

I should just let this topic die a forum death lol but I would like to engage for a bit.

I can post documented unbiased proof on the reliability of Toyota, specifically 4Runners. Sure, as I said in my post you could be one of the unlucky ones. Overall, Toyota is pretty much better than anyone at reliability.
Now, can you guys post proof on, for example, failures of KDSS or Planetary Gears? I'm really not trying to start an argument or anything. It's the weekend. Forum posts and dealer stories don't count as failure documentation and that's the point I'm trying to make. You both implied that there were "many" or "after hearing what happened to GX owners" etc. Well, how many and what proof do you have? Yes, I know your vehicle had a broke planetary. Is that just one out of 100,000? If so, that's pretty good for Toyota and just bad luck for you.

My point is, forums and dealerships have their good points. They also have some really bad points too. Rumors and misinformation spread through here faster than water down a hill and you guys both know that. Dealerships make their living spreading misinformation. So in reality, how many drivetrain components fail in a reasonable amount of time on a 4Runner? Now, if you fail something at 200K or after 15 years all bets are off. Simple metal fatigue happens. I hear of random cases but nothing's perfect. Sure, Toyota had real frame problems once upon a time. I have not heard of any other big issue. Have you guys?

That is quite a lengthy post for someone who's not trying to start an argument. In any case, I've had 4 Toyotas, two of them have failed before or around one hundred thousand miles. take that for what it is, I don't need to prove anything about it to anybody it's just my own experience I'm putting out there. Toyotas are mostly reliable cars, however my experience is that the quality is slipping.
I hope you will be ok, and don't choke on that. ;)
As far as rust and fame issues. The 2nd gen tacomas are having frame recalls as we speak. The entire problem has resurfaced again.

Back on topic...

I'm in Southern Indiana having the same issue. I've put a deposit down for them to find me a TE with KDSS in silver or white and they said no dice after 3 days of phone calls. Dark MGM is my last bet and then they said they'll have to order a 2015 and make me wait. In reality, I'll just get my cash back and make this a good old fashioned road trip deal.

You could have just said you have no data...

If this is the same chain I purchased from these are the terms: Lifetime Warranty | Toyota of Murfreesboro near Nashville, Franklin & Cookeville TN

It is a policy via a third party, the larger risk is that company going under. According to family in the industry the company is reputable and actually pays claims. I plan to drive my truck in to the ground and hopefully will never have to file a single claim, but if I throw a rod at 174k miles it certainly would be helpful to have. I don't really care if it is a marketing gimmick.

OP when I was looking for my 4runner all the Cincinnati region (middle Tennessee dealers) had available were KDSS models, strange that this changes from year to year. Too bad we can't buy factory direct and bypass all this distributor crap. Good luck in your search, I bet you have better luck near the end of the month.

This is my frost Toyota. 20k perfect miles down. Local dealership service has far exceeded expectations. So far this is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I expect this to continue but I'm not going to write off Toyota if it doesn't, stuff breaks. Anything beyond the actual factory mtbf targets and any mcr impact (good luck getting that info) is just speculation.
