Dealer VS Honest Mechanic?

Just picked up my 2004 Limited two days ago and would like to have a good, reputable mechanic give it a thorough look through and look at a few things that need attention. Any thoughts regarding finding a dealership that is nearby (not thrilled with them) or start looking for a good, honest independent with an expertise in 4Runners (not that I have found one). I'm in Fairfield County Connecticut if anyone knows of a good dealer or stand-alone.

Given a choice, I'd find a good independent mechanic. My experience with a dealer is that the work is fine, but they'll take every opportunity to upsell and talk you into things you don't need.

Even though it would be ideal, don't get too hung up on 4Runner-specific experience. There should be enough Toyota trucks and SUV's on the road for most mechanics to have dealt with Toyota in general.

I took my old '90 4Runner into dealer for the steering rod warranty replacement. They did work for free and included a full page of repairs that vehicle needed. Its now my daughter's vehicle (170k miles) so her responsibility. Clutch was one of items - it completely went 3 months later as did the timing chain. Both were on list! (I had replaced clutch at 80k miles previously) I didn't have them do any of the repairs on their list - would have been more than value of car but the list was very comprehensive and free with no strings. It also gave estimated repair costs which could be used to gauge value of an independent's estimate. Just remember value of using OEM parts over many of the cheaper/inferior aftermarket parts. I always stick with OEM brand spark plugs, igition wires, and brake pads.

Plus there are some items that Toyota will fix for free as part of special service campaigns where an independent wouldn't know about or be able to provide for free. In 2001, the same above 4Rnr had the A/C expansion valve, seals and R12 FREON replaced due to some anti-corrosive additive missing from build date. Saved me $500.

I can't see using dealer for oil changes but for specialized repairs they have training, knowledge and experience that an general independent doesn't have.
