Dealers can't find info for keyless remote

I bought a 97 SR5 2WD 4Runner with no keyless remote. I've called a couple local dealers, and they can't find any info in their computer for the keyless entry remote using a VIN number search? What's up with that? How am I supposed to find out which FCC ID I'm supposed to buy, if the dealers can't find it?:shrug:

I did manage to get a part # from another dealer an hour away. The parts guy said it's for all 4Runners, which sounds fishy, 08191-00870. Which translates into BAB237131-022. Maybe I should just take it to a dealer and let them screw me...
 
Went to the local dealer and they couldn't even get the part #, said it's too old. I gave them the one I got from the dealer it was originally purchased from, and they said they could order it, but no return on electrical parts if it's not the right one, and they could not program it, again because it's over 10 years old.

WTF?

Time to find a different dealer. Likely they just don't want to mess with it since it's 10 years old!

...I can only search by part number. The parts listings don't show a keyless remote.

Heh. Yeah, it appears that is a 2G 4Runner remote. Are you sure you have keyless entry at all?
 
I'm not sure, but it has a little black box under the seat with a tiny green reset button, and it has a "Toyota Security" LED in the button spot below the rear window button on the left side of the emergency brake handle, in the center console.

I slid the seat up, and reading the black box upside down from the back seat, I got RS3000 (08100-00821) I think? Or -00921)

Everything seems to point to the part number the one dealer gave me, as being the right one... Except for the parts site I plugged the vin# into?

I wouldn't take that as definitive. The RS3000 was a dealer add-on so the VIN may not be that useful a reference.

Thanks, I was thinking of that possibility since what I've found shows ALL 96-97 4runner have port/dealer RS3000s if they have one at all. They all use the black egg shaped fob with FCC BAB237131-022.

I'm waiting on a friend who has worked at a local high end mobile electronics store for 30 years, to get back with me. He has connections :D.

If he can't verify, I'm going to buy the $16 generic version of BAB237131-022 to start eliminating numbers. I hate troubleshooting, by swapping parts...
 
You need the 2 button egg remote. My 97 has the rs3000 with the box under the seat. There was no factory keyless option in 97. Even my limited has a dealer installed rs3000. The remote is simple to program since you just hit the green button under the seat. Just go on ebay and look for a used black 2 button remote, I believe you can no longer buy one new.
