No solid axle here! It's the 'little IFS that could' :-) Taking bypasses sucks balls! So the plan now is SAS and 37s. However, as I start the process of gathering all the parts, I'm still gonna wheel this IFS harder than ever! I most definitely want to run Holcomb Creek trail(3N93) again(and again). I also want to run Dishpan Springs too. And John Bull. Next year I plan on hosting a "trifecta" run where we start out in Arrowhead, take 3N34 to Crab Flats, then take 3N16 to 3N93, then take 3N08 back to 3N16 to 3N32 to 3N10! John Bull!

For now anyone want to run Dishpan Springs in the next week or so? Lmk

What your describing and wanting to do already has a name ..GRIZZLYCON TRAILthis is the real deal 57 miles of wheelin and 50% of it 24 miles is DIFFICULT RATEDand complete in 3 Days.pretty much two Trail sections each day as if one isn’t enough already.

1st day is long day and ground to cover. Second day slow going long day no ground / mileage covered. 3rd day long day a lot of ground to cover to the finish.

Anyone that feels they’ve got a “bad mutha f in rig” good as it gets right here in SoCal in our own backyard for a challenge marathon run. A true worthy test.

If this goes down I would be willing to ride along just to video and photo the whole run...and enjoy some good times of course.
If I was slidered, bumpered f & r and winch mounted I would be all over this shit.
I’ve had this saved for a couple years now ... on my list of must do’s!!,

This is pretty damn close to what I intended. I was only looking to do the three toughest trails up there. 3N34, 3N93, and 3N10 in a day. I've done two of them in a day but never all three. We'd need to start out early and keep the group small. Only very accomplished wheelers with built rigs on this run.

These would be the trails in ascending order of difficulty.
3N34: Dishpan Springs
3N93: Holcomb Creek
3N10: John Bull

Completely agree.

You can ride with me. hahah.

I'd be down sometime next year to do this. Tear down on the rig starts today so I can begin rebuilding the suspension components and fitting 35s. Before everything goes back together I need to figure out what's up with my rear locker, and then learn when and when not to use my front locker. I've got 2 spare cv axles now because I fully expect I'll break one on the trail using the front locker. haha. I imagine I'll be ready for this by summer time.

Wurd!! I had a feeling you would say that.

A front locker isn’t really all about “when” necessarily it’s more of “how” you engage it and then your initial forward movement ...then it’s about sittin back and letting the rig crawl (feel around) ...letting the locker and tires do the rest..is the important part
And not think they need you to help with the push of the gas pedal. To many times people get impatient or in a rush and think “oh it needs some gas to help give it a boost up” wrong. Just back it down realign and give it another attempt and this may need to be done a couple times..just let the tires (are like hands) going rock climbing you reach up and feel around for the best spot to grip...and think of the locker ..as the power you call upon when you pull yourself up onto the rock, which is always slow and steady and focused...(never in a race or fast and out of control.cause why? You’ll slip and fall, and if that happens...cough cough you end up broken) and now that your hands and locker have gotten you half way up your feet (rear tires) will bring up the rear and naturally start feeling around for solid surface to grip/ push forward off of to take you up and over the ledge...with a sigh of relief. But ready for the next obstacle since no extra energy was wasted (over throttle, heat up the gears and rig) and used or abused.

And don’t engage a locker if your tires are already pinned in or pushed against a solid surface already. This plus throttle equals hopping, snapping then chattering sound of broken teeth.
And especially if both tires are involved in either scenario will cause binding and friction = no function then destruction. No passing go...just coughing up dough.

I can see how “when” is important for you...since you have always used ATRAC 24/7 like it’s going out of style as soon as you hit dirt you’ve relied on it so you didn’t have to try or worry about getting stuck...you relied on it to do everything for you...that was your bad habit.

Now you can’t do that anymore brotha...not with lockers. It’s not a button that does everything for you anymore. If you just remember that and when you go to turn your lockers on just picture yourself bare handed and bare footed taking a quick scan of the best line for you Climb the hill or pile of rocks in front of you...
I guarantee that same line is the best line for you and locked rig.
Slow but steady and never going past steady. Only back to realign just a hair.

If you can take this and let it sink in...seriously

You should have no worries of grenading your front or rear diffs with having lockers in them brotha.
What happened in Odessa won’t happen again honestly...caused you learned from it. That you can’t rely on a mechanical assistant (atrac, lockers) and just cowboy up everything.. now that you realize what you have always relied on (mechanical assistant) are breakable .... this is when you become a better wheeler and Odessa will never happen again cause of it.

Hence your original question of “when” cause for the old Danny “when” was at all times and never a question and never used properly.(the “when”) its a simple answer reallY...ONLY WHEN ITS ABSOLUTELY NEEDED..all times = BOOOOOOOM!!! over worked and tired.

Or you can keep blaming me ... I don’t mind.

Just remember you’ve got a bad ass rig now a legit one...treat it like one.
Don’t abuse

Luv ya, brotha.
Miah

Hope it helps and makes sense.

I'm just gonna keep blaming you for the rear end. Hahah.

I actually ran without atrac a few times with the tw guys so I didn't rely on it 100%, but you're right I relied on it too much. Hey, it works great in loose steep stuff and I'll likely continue to use it in shit like that. I can't tell you how many times I was glad I had it when we were stuck in the mud in Anza or climbing hills in 4" of snow where lockers could have swung me one way or another atrac kept me going straight. Crawling in general is new to me and I'm all well too aware that hopping and chattering is bad for the diffs. Atrac actually prevents that from happening most of the time. We've all seen the pic right before I blew it out. My tires were firmly planted and even Kyle confirmed they never left the ground. I've got a bone to pick with Odessa. That's for sure.

Could have sworn your first gen was already solid axle. Guess I wasn't paying close enough attention. We gotta do a replay of Holcomb next year. I'm locked front and rear now and I'll have 35s on by February. Hahah.

Gettin the SAS process in gear. Took a run out to Santa Clarita with Eric yesterday to pick up a beefed housing and some Dirty 30s from a buddy of his. Already trussed and gusseted! Nice. Got some other parts for Christmas so looks like I'm on my way. Maybe I'll start an SAS build thread...
