Decided to stick with Revo , BUT then......

I went out to look at some household items with the wife today, we both had off , the tire place I was going to drop my truck off at did not have any openings , so we went on our way and always take the 4R. As I was driving down the road I see this FF tire co. so I stop to get a price , look around , get their price on Revos , then I notice the Nokian Vatiiva there , never see it in person , similar design as Revo , but yet quite a bit different when side by side comparison. The peaked my interest ,slightly more aggressive then the Revo. I have done a search and read what people have to say here . As you know I want an AT tire and the Vatiiva seemed like a good choice (visually at least) .

Anyone ..... good , bad , or the ugly ??? Wondering about strength , off road ability , they don't have a P rated (per say) on the tire , but the sales dufus said it's because they are between a P and an LT ( I found the say P metric tire o0n the sire saying UTQG as 460 ) far as strength goes. Thought's ?? The guy there said he never had any complaints and they are "tough off road AT tires" , like he would say anything else....lol.

265/70/17 = $155.00 each + $20 each mt. and balance . about $40 less a pc from Revos .

What does this mean ??

I think the Nokian Vatiiva is an excellent choice that I may have tried myself if I was aware of it before buying the Revos. I don't have any experience with that particular tire but have used Nokians before and they are great. Also keep in mind Bridgestone has a $100 rebate this month on the Revos I believe.

I don't have any personal experience with the Nokians. However, a friend of mine is the manager at a local tire retailer and he suggested these tires. He has them on his personal ride and loves them. A co-worker of mine also has a set of these tires on his his Chevy z-71 and he loves them as well.

These will be my next tire whenever they get some more in stock.

Yes , thanks but not on the tire that I'm talking about which is the Vatiiva AT.

Most of the Nokians are severe weather rated , The Vatiiva does not have it to my knowledge.

I think this tire is relatively new for Nokian , but not sure. I like the aggressiveness and honestly would not consider any of the other Nokians for my use.

I have not heard of their all terrain , toughness and ability off road for this particular model.

I just purchased a stone quarry so if I go with the Revos they will see a lot of rock action and will be a great test to actually see how they hold up . I will run P rated . The Revos have proven themselves in certain ways , like gas milage , off road , abuse , off road snow traction , hard packed glazed wet snow ( which its like ice ) sucked and nothing short off studded tires or chains would have got me out. maybe not the best pick but trying to find a happy medium and it seem to fit the bill for a DD and off roading.The ride has continued good through 2/3 rd's of the tire life until it started to diminish I'll have to see what I can dig up on the Nokians though.

Vatiiva AT looks like a good choice. Fuel econ should be the same. Winter traction will be better. Full siping will be a plus. 265/70/17 come in P and LT (E) but the price difference is about $70. P-rated comes with a 60k treadwear warranty as well.

Well as far as wheeling goes , not sure about that but nit will be a good test for a modern day P rated tire.....lol.

I bought it just to clear balance of stone which I am already working on contracting out removal of Lannon stone . Its not like a rock crawling spot or anything , but there sure is plenty of rock and stone and gravel trails everywhere. It's kind of creepy being way down in a hole like that. I bought the quarry from a man I know who had it and is 88 y/o and still works down in the pit. Unreal , he's a bulldog !!

An important thing to remember about the UTOG # is that there is no = sign. A higher number indicates a longer lasting tire in theory but there are many examples of 460 outlasting 500 rated tires. IIRC it's a combo of original tread depth, treadwear rating, tire diameter and I am sure there's something that I am forgetting. Another point, I read many years ago was that for some reason a Michellin 500 does not equate to a Bridgestone 500. To me that defeats purpose of a universal rating but what do I know...

My point is don't get scared off by a difference of 40 in the UTOG treadwear rating.

As far as the salesman saying it in between or similar to a heavy P or light LT (and I'm paraphrasing) the Nokians use the ISO (European) Metric rating vs P metric rating system. This TOYO pub does a nice job of explaining it http://marktg.toyotires.com/file/loadinflationtable.pdf

I am going to pass on the Nokian . I cannot find enough information on the strength , toughness , off road ability , I found good snow info but thats it.

Maybe I not good enough at searching but I have scouring for Nokian info too. It's really hard to come by.

It makes me think the service network may be a problem too, it's unfortunate.

PS- I've been reading at Tirerack. The Firestone Destination A/T is getting amazing reviews. I just can't believe it. To me the last good Firestone was in the 70's, the old Firestone Snowbiters. From then until now I have tried to steer clear of Firestone but it looks like they got lucky with the Dest A/T. The Dest A/T's and the GY SA's have a huge advantage, you can blow a tire anywhere in the US or Canada and have it handled pronto.

Thats like a roadside assistance . Its a great thing , but that would not influence my decision. Today I was going to get tires and my dad ended up having an emergency heart cath. & stent put in. So postponed again , tomorrow I have to serve and protect ( my job ) . I keep puttin this off so long pretty soon I'll be riding on rims , just kidding , still safe . One of these days I'll be just passing a tire store and stop in and have them put whatever they have on ....lol , just to get it done !!!! Who knows what I'll end up with , maybe some Donlop AT20's .
