New member
Decided to go with Toytec Ultimate lift. Tires will be BFG KM2 255/80R17's on black Level 8 MK6 wheels with the factory silver TRD centers. Here is the rig its going on. 2002 SR5 186k. Anybody want to change my mind? Sway me in another direction?

Good choice,I just put on the same lift,I wanted 255 but stayed with 265 duratracs.I have 410 gears and don't want to be short on power,I have been down that road many times,if I decided to later I will swap in 488 gears.

Hard to know that without knowing what you're doing with the truck. If it's a pavement-pounding grocery-getting mall crawler I think you're wasting your money, and if you plan on prerunning the Baja 1000 or competing in KoH I think you're wasting your money. If it's a daily driven weekend warrior, I think that's just about right. :thumb:

That's pretty much it. I have a 2008 Tundra also so it really won't be driven every day either. I prob won't off road it a lot but when I do I want it to be able. I'm use to the buggy in my avatar so I will have to be careful and before the buggy I had a built 85 yota on 35's with front and rear lockers. Main decision is to go with the 255 (33's) or stay a little smaller with the 265/75's? I used the excuse for buying it to have something to haul my new Weimaraner pup around in (keep her out of my Tundra) but I really just wanted a 3rd gen to lift.
 
I run the 255s on the '85 in my avatar. Love 'em. They're superior to wider tires everywhere except deep mud or deep snow. You get a little more height than 285s, with less rotational inertia, less unsprung weight, and less wind resistance. I think unless you're regularly mud bogging or snow wheeling, they're perfect. You might feel the need to regear though?

Nice buggy, let's get some more pics of that please. :)

Sure, ill post some more pics of the buggy tomorrow. I really don't want to regear. If the 33's are going to hurt it that much I may just go with some 32's. I guess with 32's I won't hurt the power much and won't have any rubbing issues. I may go back with my original 255/75R17 KM1's. or the KM2's in 265/75r16. Anybody have 33 on stock gears? Will it hurt the power that much?
 
I run 285/75-16's with stock gears. It is a bit slower on the line, but gets me around just fine and I have no trouble going too fast haha. Keep in mind though, I have the E-Locker with factory 4:30 gears so I have a little better shot than the stock 4:10 guys...

Plug the tire sizes into this gear calculator to see what your RPMs will be at xxMPH for comparison. Keep in mind that very few tires are truly the height listed on the size.

What gears do you have? Your stock gears may not be the same as the next guy's.

I tried 285s on stock 4.30s and didn't like it, but I'm at 4500 feet. You're much closer to sea level, so you might get away with it.

Auto or manual? That makes a big difference too.
 
I have the toytec lift with black mk6 and 285 goodyear mtrs. I have 4.10s and it does alright, but will be swapping a rear elocked axle and front dif with 430s when it warms up. My 4runner is satin black though,so it doesn't give anyone a real good idea of what theirs may look like.

It's auto. Toytec ultimate lift ordered today. Now I have to finish the tire decision. 265/75R16, 255/85R16(backordered), 255/80R17 and have to get the wheels????
 
I'm running 255/80/17 on stock gears, there's some power loss but I'm not sure how much since I went from 31s to 33s about a week before moving from ny to co so elevation messed that up also. Cooper makes a really nice at tire if you don't wanna go full mud

The difference between 255/75s and 255/80s is only about an inch, and that's if they run true to the stamped size and that's with no weight on the tire.

I run 255/75s with about 3.5" of suspension and 1" of body lift. I like them quite a bit and am more interested in how a tire performs rather than a "look" that nobody else really cares about.

I have ran KM1's 31x10.50r15 before on a 99 tacoma extended cab trd and they lasted forever. When I sold it they had 45k on them and honestly they still had 65% tread left if not more. Since the power loss would be less with them 255/75r17 I may just go with them. I ran 32x12.50r15's on a 98 Tacoma 3.4 auto with a 3.91 gear and it did fine. Do you have any pics you could post? Thanks

I'm amazed at the "power loss" rumors that run rampant on this site. You're not comparing 31s with 37s.
 
To me 255/85R16 is THE tire . Those numbers conjure up images of Land Rovers crossing the African veldt or Land Cruisers in the Austrian bush . It's a magic number like 416 Rigby . But that said their expensive and hard to find . If I had 17'' wheels I would run 255/75R17 , it's a good size and around here there's usually a cheap set some one pulled off a new jeep .

That's exactly where I get them. Any '07 and up Rubicon comes with KM1's in this size. Current set had 1200 miles on them and were slightly more than $500 for six of them (one had 10k on it and I sold it for $75).
