Definitive A/C thread

There are lots of threads that imply that the A/C isn't very good as you get to the rear (3rd row hatch area), but there are an almost equal number that say "the A/C is fine"

What is the consensus of the group? I want to keep the pooch happy.

Toss the third row, fold up the "2nd row", roll down all 5 windows, open sunroof, turn on the dash vents only and blast the ac on max. Happy puppies.

All I can say is short of Death Valley, my valley is the hottest place on Earth and my air works just fine. I do have ceramic tint all the way around including the windshield and it must help. I DO wish they offered the Truck without the stupid Black interior on Superwhite when I bought it. My previous 89 had light grey and it was beautiful.

It doesn't do anything for our miserable humidity, but the truck is cooler when I get in. Oh, and don't start out running in recirculate mode on a hot truck. Why try to cool the interior air when it's hotter than the outside air. Open some windows at first to remove the hot air as the AC system starts to cool.

Mine is cold in front. I’m usually by myself but really don’t know how it is in the way back (3rd row area). Never checked. Vents seem to work in second row just fine. Don’t block the vents under the fronnt sests though.

Not so much the temp of the ac for me, but the volume of air it doesn't put out. Wish the blower motor was stronger to help combat the Louisiana humidity.

This is my complaint as well. Air temp seems fine, just not enough of it.

Coming from a houshold of Daimler-Chrysler products, the AC is the best I've ever encountered. Often times, I find myself putting it closer to a neutral setting with longer highway trips (greater than 30 miles) as it gets too cold.

The ceramic tint also helps alot with the black interior. My 4runner is more comfortable than the wifes RX after both have been sitting in a open parking lot with the sun beating down on them. She has no tint currently.

The first thing I do when I get a new car is get PPF, ceramic coating and ceramic tint - usually between 70 and 50% (including the moonroof). This will be replacing a 2001 RX. In that car, the AC is fine in the first and second rows, but not very good all the way in the bak.

Does the 4R have any vents back there?

It has the best vent in the back... rear window full down mode.

If you're looking to keep something cold in a third row of a 4runner, I would select a different vehicle. The third row of a 4runner isn't designed for long distance people moving (check the payload, and with 7 passengers you'll have zero weight allowance for gear or towing). Land Cruiser is what you're after, but you could buy two 4Runners for the price. Or head over to a suburban, they blow cold in the back.

Blows plenty cold, of course humidity will affect performance. Some parts of the country might not be so happy with it.

No there are no additional vents beyond those in the center console and under the front seats (those may be routed to the cooled seats in the Limited trim [not 100% sure]).

Third row passengers will likely complain if they're looking for the feeling of air hitting their faces from the AC vents only. The third row in these trucks are really an after thought in terms of usability. They're definitely not meant for extended use, and I suspect it won't be cool enough back there if the trip is too short and it's a hot/humid day. Same is true if the temp scale is reversed.

The rear vents need moved. If you leave your rear seats down anything in the back, my dog, has a hard time cooling.

Actually, if Ford still made that 350 Econoline 4x4, I'd get one of those. We have one of those in the office with A/C unit on top and a generator. We've taken that thing to places that normal people wouldn't go.

Unfortunately, having good A/C in the rear is a necessity for me. Anybody have any experience with a GX? On paper, the third row has cold A/C.
