Definitive answer, ATF capacity for 1997, 3.4L V-6 Auto T4R?

Got the B&M cooler installed and 12 qts. of ATF ready to go, going to do a complete flush, with hose in gal. jug, run a qt out add a qt., etc..

While reviewing procedures just now I see I may need 16 qt's. instead of 12 qts.

I cannot seem to find a definitive answer anywhere, let alone my owners manual.

Dr. Coffee's method for the Sienna (which he states is similar to the 4Runner) uses 12, another guy fills an orange bucket with 16.

Again, a 1997 T4R, Auto trans. 4x4, 3.4 V6.

i would say the more the better. because slowly diluting the dirty fluid with just 1 quart at a time and then taking that percentage and diluting it again by a quart at a time will only slowly flush the fluid.

anywho its better to have more and return it than to be stuck half way through a job and not have enough. id go with 16.

Flush it until the fluid draining out is red, then stop at the next quart. Mine took about 11qts.

You are not diluting, in a complete flush the clean fluid pushes the dirty ahead of it so you stop when you see clean.

Amazon was selling 3 gals. at a time so I should be good with the 12 qts' buut perhaps I will get one more from a local Ad. Auto, I can always return it.

There isn't a physical barrier between the old and new fluid, so they will mix a bit. That is the dilution being referred to.

Do u have a link to or a walk thru of the flush u r speaking of? I have been wanting to do something with my atf but cant decide what. Dont wanna drop the pan and all that madness. Was thinking about throwing one of those in line magnetic filters in and then just draining the 3 or 4 quarts that will drain each time I do an oil change and adding new. I figure that over time this would do the trick without getting too involved and also not costing alot all at once....maybe a bad idea just what I have been bouncing around my head

Hey thanks. I am actually in chesapeake so I think we are quite far apart. If you dont mind me asking tho....what fluid did u use? I have seen people say either dexlll or dexVl but I really dont know much about tranny fluid as I have had manuals for the last 13 years. Do u know the difference and/or why/if one is better than the other. Havent looked in my manual yet to see what it says but I also know that fluid technologies have improved quite a bit since 2001 and there may be better things out now. Thanks for any info

I ended up using valvoline synthetic blend, it said on the bottle it was compatible with toyotas. To tell you the truth, I think the biggest difference in name brand fluids is the price. For a normal day to day driver, any synthetic is fine....
