Fourth Step

I held the aluminum bar in my vise and bent a small tab on the end opposite the nut. This would be how I held it in place while tightening. I measured it first, marked it, then bent it. No guessing.

I also cut a small piece of bicycle inner tube to use as a rubber cushion in between the bracket and the hood, same concept as the original rubber well nuts. Protect the hood and provide some vibration isolation.

The completed device works perfect. I held it in place, and it was bit hard to get the bracket in position

This is a picture of the left side. I thought that if the aluminum bar ever worked loose, it could slide down into the hood. So I used the magic foilmastic to tape it to the hood. Trust me this stuff BLOWS AWAY Duct tape for holding power. Good up to 200 degree F, and waterproof once installed. I use a lot of small square pieces to cover the holes in the wheel wells in the engine bay. Other guys have used grommets, but I couldn't find the perfect sizes.

The bent tab doesn't hit anything, in case anyone wonders. I thought of driiling a small hole in the end of the tab, and putting some nylon line in it, letting it hang free, but the tape is going to keep it there forever I'm sure.

wow, that looks like a great fix!! i don't have much ability to drill around here, but i'll head to home depot or lowes some day soon here (i end up going to lowes every day for more black spray paint for my wheels so i'm sure it'll be sooner than i think!) and pick up some supplies too!

New version... Much Easier to Make

This is what I do. I start simplifying after something is designed. Oh well. I'm not going to change the version I have in my truck, because it has NOT budged or loosened at all, unlike the original expansion nuts.

Material is aluminum flat bar stock. Here is a .bmp image blueprint. VERY simple to make. The only special process is drilling and tapping that hole, which requires a tap, and appropriate drill. Otherwise it's very easy to make.

Also an accomodation for a fish line "keeper" wire has been added. Use only stainless steel wire so it doesn't rust away.

Still holding up, NO wobble

My mod brackets for the Deflecta-Sheild hood protector are still 100% solid. No flutter or loosening at all. Just an update if any were wondering.

I made a pair for another guy who owns a runner. Installed easy, and his hood deflector is solid now too.
