Deleting brake backing plates?

So I'm finally getting around to doing the manual front hub conversion on my spare set of welded/gusseted knuckles (so I can swap everything over as an assembly) and I've realized that I didn't get backing plates..

What's the consensus on just deleting them? I don't run them on my sports cars; what's the consequence of ditching them on the truck?

I keep mine on these days. Have found it to help keep little rocks and other crap from getting up in my brake pads.
