I didn’t think we could monitor transmission temp. I can only see coolant temp. what’s the PID?

I'm not too sure, I couldn't figure out how to get them from the app. Sorry! It was just setup..

A little preview of what's to come:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43078827964/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8155"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1794/43078827964_36cdf6debc_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8155"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Just returned from a long trip north up to Banff! Many pictures to come, I just haven't found time to go through and edit the photos yet.

Some things that will be written about:
- passing 300k miles!
- HAM radio install
- trip as a whole

Finally got around to going through all of my photos and editing them!
This and the next post are a bit of a read but I promise it (maybe) will be worth it.

Flemster and I have been busy moving Rocky Mountain Racks into a new shop here in Fort Collins and catching up on orders. Classes also started again.. so it has been pretty crazy these past few weeks.

Recently though, I did hit 300k miles! Everything is still running strong and I'm hoping it will keep going!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30458974808/in/dateposted-public/" title="221.300k"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1879/30458974808_ec22062945_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="221.300k"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I put on roughly 10k miles this summer, even while working more than full time. It was hectic but I enjoyed every moment of it. Pretty much every weekend I was out exploring and camping. I think I used my tent roughly 16 nights.

I also installed a HAM radio a while back. It's a TYT-TH7800 dual band 50W, paired with a 19.25" dual band antenna. I put the body under the driver seat but attached the head near the shifter- see below! It's nice and out of the way, while still being completely accessible. I removed my CB mic and put this mic in it's holder.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43608908164/in/dateposted-public/" title="220.hamantenna"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1880/43608908164_3a9265172e_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="220.hamantenna"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43608907734/in/dateposted-public/" title="219.hamantenna"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1867/43608907734_ca546c45a1_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="219.hamantenna"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The aluminum plate acts as the groundplate for the antenna (it's approximately 20" x 24"). It's just some thin sheet with the holes drilled in it, and just took a few minutes to make.

The performance of an actual HAM is insane, compared to the handhelds I have been using! The audio is also crisp and clear, making it much easier to talk to everyone on the trails. Before anyone asks, yes, I do have my license. I passed the test for my tech license mid May and installed the radio shortly after I received my callsign.

Congrats on getting your HAM license. I need to finish studying for the same. And congrats on the effort that you and Flemster have been putting into Rocky Mountain Racks. I think if funds allow after my gears and locker, I will be ordering one of your racks.

Hey man, if you think about it next time you are by your rig, can you snap a pick of your front King preload setting you are set at. I have the same coilovers and need to drop down a bit to get some rake. Thanks man.

Thank you, to everything!!

Also, here you go! Very dirty but shows the threads well.

Canada trip!

Flemster, 4-Ripcord, RockyMtnPhoto, and Drew in the 1st gen spent a little over a week traveling through Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier, and Banff. It was awesome! This was also my first time out of the country, and I got a passport just for this trip.

As always, additional pictures are on my Flickr.

Day 1:
We first went up to the Tetons and camped at a site with a good view of them just outside of the park.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459087708/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7611"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1859/30459087708_b0a2b72f49_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7611"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459085208/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7617"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1875/30459085208_aa1f0ddcc3_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7617"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

We spent the day in the park mostly just sightseeing. In the afternoon we headed towards Yellowstone and camped between the two parks at a reservoir.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459077548/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7658"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1883/30459077548_8e88be9edf_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7658"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Day 2:
The next day was spent exploring Yellowstone. This was my 6th time here, but I always love it- the park is amazing. I also saw my first Grizzly!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/44277868122/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7752"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1896/44277868122_0874609f15_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7752"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/44325799231/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7776"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1846/44325799231_96f9a7d657_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7776"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

From there, we decided to drive towards Cody and the Morrison Jeep Trail. We ended up camping near the trailhead, but didn't get there until about 1 AM. This is the view we woke up to!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/44325798261/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7787"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1858/44325798261_4ddb4f6c03_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7787"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The trail was the next day... and the next post!

Day 3:
Morrison Jeep Trail. This is one of those must-do trails, and should be on everyone's list.

The switchbacks were tight, but nothing crazy.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43419896025/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7845"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1888/43419896025_83557ca8fd_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7845"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Mini three wheel!
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/44277854932/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7865"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1890/44277854932_e57242dfdf_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7865"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/44325777491/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7912"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1855/44325777491_d8f78f5d80_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7912"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

My favorite part is how diverse the trail is. There's a little bit of everything- mountain switchbacks, forest areas, mud, dust, and high-altitude above the treeline.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/42518041780/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7936"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1863/42518041780_08cd8a9a48_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7936"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459042158/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7945"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1893/30459042158_f7ef8033f6_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7945"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

That night we camped near the end of the trail, close to the Beartooth Highway.

Day 4:
We headed west on the Beartooth highway. While stopped to take pictures at a waterfall, an old woman fell off the trail, down a steep embankment probably 100ft. We were one of the first there, and did everything we could to help out. This included blocking the road for this:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/44277842952/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_7990"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1885/44277842952_4e10dfc3ac_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_7990"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

After getting her out and into the helicopter, we kept going west! The Beartooth Highway is awesome, and the perfect drive.

We headed back into Yellowstone for a little bit:
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43608964394/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8015"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1859/43608964394_0f99a3d6c0_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8015"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

After we got out of the park, we had dinner in Gardiner and camped not too far away.

Day 5:
This day was mostly a road day. Once everyone was ready, we headed up through Bozeman and to Glacier. We camped near the park at a river, a spot that I picked out! This ended up being one of the favorite campsites.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459032978/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8050"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1867/30459032978_bc492137d4_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8050"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Day 6:
We headed into Glacier and drove Going-to-the-Sun Road, which was incredible! Definitely a must-do if you're at the park. However, it was incredibly busy and finding parking was tough.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43608959934/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8077"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1843/43608959934_b88a733044_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8077"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43608958644/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8103"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1883/43608958644_7efaac2602_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8103"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

We kept heading North towards the border, and made it around dinner time!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459024168/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8155"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1854/30459024168_e2dfd02d42_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8155"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

We had trouble finding any sort of free or dispersed camping in the area, and had to pay to stay at a campground.

Day 7:
Banff! With a relatively early start, we drove into Banff after a few more hours of driving.

I ended up splitting up with everyone here, as I had to catch a flight that night and wanted to check out some of the park before I left.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/30459018398/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8191"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1889/30459018398_798d4fe464_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8191"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43419899855/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8217"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1872/43419899855_e638944568_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8217"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

After a few hours of exploring, I drove to Calgary. I needed to be back in Denver for my internship (the one day I wasn't able to take off), so I flew in late the night before. After working on Saturday, I headed back to the airport and flew back to Calgary that night! After getting in around 11, I got a hotel for the night and got some much needed sleep.

Woke up early the next morning and headed south. Drove the entire 1100 miles and 17 hours on Sunday, and made it back to Fort Collins around 11 PM. Long day... but I was back just in time to be back at work on Monday.

Awesome Trip report! Thanks for sharing. That's beautiful country and I hope you're all caught up on sleep.

Wow! What a trip man. You have been putting some good miles on. And they all look like well earned miles that were worth it! You fit in a lot of great scenery in a short amount of time. I think your 4Runner has sold me on getting some STT Pros. At this point, I am not sure if I want to bump up to 35s or just keep the 285's. I will be picking up my rig with its new 4.88 gears and rear ARB locker today. I will probably have a better idea on size after I drive around for a bit with the 285s.

So, I forget his name from all the videos I have seen, but that grey 1st gen, didn't it used to be red? Or was that someone else's? The build looks the same from what I can remember.

And I am glad you made it up to Canada. That place is beautiful. I go often as the border is only three hours away. I have yet to go offroad there as I am usually in my special lady friend's vehicle, but man-o-man there is some beautiful scenery out that way. The Sea to Sky highway drive up to Whistler, on the west coast is stunning. I recently went for a weekend get away to Ucluelet on Vancouver Island. Mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, beaches, it has a little of everything.

Thanks for sharing your adventure Hayden.

Thank you! It took a while but I did catch up. Definitely a busy week, but I enjoyed it.

Thank you! So many miles this summer. It's kind of crazy to think about how much gas I ran through it... worth it. I'm still a big fan of the STT Pros, except for their price point. The gears and locker are going to be awesome, I'm jealous!

It was!! That's Drew, and he wrapped it earlier this year.

I was a fan, definitely need to go back one day. The Rockies were absolutely incredible near Banff, and I wouldn't hesitate to spend a good bit of time there given the chance. I need to take a trip to the PNW- I actually haven't been up there! It sounds incredible though. Maybe next year...?

Glad I could share!

.... I'm still a big fan of the STT Pros, except for their price point. .....

What about the weight penalty? I'm starting to seriously plan my move to 35's and the biggest turn off of the STT Pros for me is the extra 10lbs/tire over Duratracs.

....... Maybe someday I will upgrade the rears to ones like yours, but I would want to make sure there's a way I could Mount the external Reservoir so they don't have to piggyback on the main shock. That seems to be the only drawback with those external reservoirs is it they get in the way when they start to rotate. I know Unner is running the same set up, but I'm not sure how his anti rotation solution is holding up. It would seem to me that if King has the ability to make these things custom that you could request enough length of reservoir connecting hose to mount them somewhere out of the way.

It's actually quite the pain in the ass. I pretty much check the alignment on them every time I wash the truck, and I'd say 1 out of 5 times I need to manually move them out of the way. I've had mine on for over a year now and I can assure you, it's not as simple as tightening them down. Mine are damn tight.

Also... derpiful how do you like those 600 lbs springs? I went with 650's, and even recommended them to Unner when he reached out to me about my setup, but now that my bumper is on I'm wondering if I should have gone with the 600lbs springs. Unfortunately when I was wheeling on a really flexy trail this last weekend I forgot to disconnect my front swaybar, so I wasn't able to see how much they flex. Right now though, I can put a jack under my LCA and lift the wheel right off the ground without compressing the Coilover almost at all (and my coils are set to almost the lowest position, as in, the hat is almost to the top of the thread giving me only like a 1.25 in lift). I imagine the 650's will lend better to 3in of lift though, and I still need to add a winch to the front.

Not very concerned about the weight penalty, I've already added hundreds of pounds and have heavy steel wheels too, so it isn't much in my mind.

My zip tie method held up great until this last weekend when one broke wheeling, making the resi contact the lower control arm and the gas tank skid. Left some nice deep marks on it too. Oh well... time to double or even triple up the zip ties.

I've been a fan of the 600s. They flex really well and that's what I want.

Made some updates to the front end recently.

First, I added an RCI front skid! I've needed a skid for a LONG time, and I finally found the RCI one used. The timing was perfect, as I was actually about to go buy this new from them (local to me), but someone I knew was upgrading and sold this to me for a very reasonable price.

I'm a fan of it so far. My only complaint is how it doesn't protect the corners of the radiator, but hopefully that isn't too much of an issue. If I have time down the road, I might weld on some plate and extend it.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/45350023871/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_20181015_170234"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1907/45350023871_aea3e6b913_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_20181015_170234"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Second, I swapped the lightbar on my bumper to an ExtremeLED 20" combo bar. The mounts are just some plate I cut and welded on. Technically, it has a row of amber right in the middle- however, the color doesn't match the 38" very well so I didn't wire it. This bar was a test for Extreme and they don't actually sell it- I imagine because the color is very off. I do like the black though, and it fits the rest of the front end very well.

I've slacked a bit on updating this, so here's a few posts coming up!

A while ago I went up to the Montezuma area with TCMach, Fishwerks, NateMob, and a few others.

We ran Red Cone Pass, Webster Pass, and Radical Hill. These are trails I should have done a long time ago (especially when I lived closer). Had a great time but didn't take too many pictures:
