New engine runs!
The swap took a while (being my first time pulling an engine), but overall it wasn't too bad.
I was told the "new" used engine was out of an 01 4Runner with 165k. From everything I can tell this was out of an pre-00 manual 4Runner, based on the various lines and connections with it.

Overall the engine was pretty clean, and I was happy with my purchase.

Should have just done the front diff now, would have been so much easier:

While out and on the stand, I did the timing belt, water pump, all the various seals, and the valve cover gaskets. Incredibly easily to do when there's so much access!

I ran into some issues getting the trans mounted, no matter what I tried it felt that it kept getting stuck and the bolts simply wouldn't go in all the way. After fighting it for a while, I pulled the engine back out (not too hard, since the tranny was the first thing I was working on), and found a pilot bearing where the torque converter shaft goes in. This is when I found out that this was out of a manual. After a bit, the bearing was out, and the engine went back in.
Once everything was free, the trans mounted up very easily with no issues. A few hours of bolting everything back up and routing the various wires, and the engine was ready to start!

First crank made a loud BANG which made me very worried- did something fall into the engine?? After some quick troubleshooting, we found that somehow the EFI relay blew and that was the noise. I swapped the defog relay into the EFI spot (same relay), and tried to start it again.
After some struggling, it started! A bit of white smoke and then it was smooth.
Had a pretty major coolant leak from the oil cooler lines, so I swapped over the line from my old engine. I couldn't see any damage (maybe it just wasn't seated correctly), but it isn't leaking anymore.
Now I'm noticing a slow but steady oil leak from what appears to be the oil pan. My plan is to pull the engine again this weekend and reseal the pan with the Toyota FIPG and hope it fixes it. I'm also planning on inspecting the oil pump and surrounding seals while it's out to make sure it isn't one of them instead.
Regardless, it runs! I'm happy to have a running engine again. This one is smooth and quiet, and so far I've gotten 19-21mpg on the 3 tanks that have been through it. Not sure if that's just me being super easy on it or if this engine somehow gets better mileage, but I'll take it.
Now time to wheel it some more!

Yeah, it sure was nice. Maybe I should just pull the motor to do maintenance from now on...
Thank you! I haven't figured out how to get rid of it yet. Still sitting in the shop on a pallet.

Well done. I bet knocking that out is a huge relief. I hope all the seal swaps go well. Good on you for getting into it and making it happen. Once you have invested the amount of time, energy, parts, and money into these things, it seems like a waste to let all but the most serious catastrophes take them out of action. Glad yours lives on.
You might have told me before, but how is your light bar on your roof wired up? I am interested to find out if anyone has drilled a hole for a pass-through that you can run a disconnect through. Anyway. Keep on keeping on.

Huge relief, this was a bigger project than I really intended on taking on, but I'm glad I did it now! I definitely think I'm at the point where it's hard to simply move on to another vehicle.
I have the wiring going through the roof, under the headliner, down the a-pillar, and to the battery/switches from there. Under the stock roof track caps (the little ones at the ends), there's a small plug you can pull that has a hole into the headliner area. I simply unsoldered the quick disconnect plug, ran the wiring through, and soldered it back together. Now I have a plug I can disconnect and take the entire rack and lights off!

Cool. Thanks for the info. I think if I ever get to a roof light bar, it will probably be after other lights first. I wouldn't mind having Ditch, and bumper lights, front and rear. That would be a huge improvement. But I have to say, even adding some retrofit headlights has brightened things up a whole lot. So for now, it's an improvement.

Finally got around to getting my photos from Rock Therapy edited. Things have been busy recently with Sherpa Equipment Co. work, which is good! I've been working on lots of new products we're excited to unveil.
Last month I went out to Moab for Rock Therapy-- making this my 4th time out there for this event.
We ended up leaving Fort Collins about 8PM on Thursday, and got out there at about 4AM Friday morning. Woke up and ran Moab Rim, which was an awesome trail!

The next morning we ran Metal Masher. Had a Taco blow their rear diff on the first ledge, so we took it apart, got the ring out, and reassmbled to limp it home.

Finally, woke up Sunday, had some breakfast in town, and headed back. Quick but fun weekend trip!
Last month I went out to Moab for Rock Therapy-- making this my 4th time out there for this event.

Well, I suppose this is pretty much the end of this thread. I purchased a 2015 Tacoma TRD OR a bit ago.

I do plan on building this very similarly to the 4Runner, just waiting on parts to start showing up!
The 4Runner is going to get listed for sale soon. I had tons of fun with this in the past few years, and it's taken me all over the country (and even Canada!), but it's time to start a new project with something a little bit newer.
Thanks to everyone who made this forum what it was, providing knowledge and advice when needed. I'll still check in every once in a while!

I'll eventually get a build thread up and running, and I'll be sure to put a link here.
Doing some quick math.... assuming the smaller lunchables @ 5x5x1.5, and the Tacoma bed @60x47x19, that about 1350 lunchables.
Assuming I eat 3 per meal, 3 meals a day, that means about 6 months of food back there! Efficient!

Yup. This thread will be missed. I have always loved watching updates for this thread. I loved all the things you did to your 4runner over the years. I wasn't too far behind in similar mods, so I always liked to open this thread for good motivation. And while I am sad to see this chapter of your adventure close, I am excited to see what you end up doing with your new Taco.
I imagine you have some modifications in mind, but what kind of build are you wanting to end up with? Also, what made you decide on the Taco. I am jelly. Those things are pretty sweet. I was sort of undecided about a replacement after I flopped my 4runner. I had a lot of things going on at once, and I went with the slightly easier option of finding a replacement for all the parts for my old build. I would have been very happy to get a Taco though. They are a bit newer and have tons of aftermarket support. I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it man.
