cv boots

both my cv boots puked (only leaking not torn,and clamps are tight) after only 400 miles...how long can i drive with them leaking before they MUST be replaced. Its going to be another 2 weeks until I can afford to replace them. otherwise im loving the lift, ride is great, have to take the corners much slower though :wink2:

Shes got a little black eye, hit a mailbox over the summer. Still running stock suspension but hoping to get something new and learn how to put it in! And before anyone says it, yes I have done the maintenance. Brought it in to get checked out for leaks etc, and it was clear! Now hopefully she'll stay that way.

P.S. someone teach me how to rotate pictures on here. or do I have to do it pre-upload

PPS got to take her out in some mud after days of continuous rain. Don't have a lot of state designated trails where I live so You kinda gotta get creative:laugh::eyebrows::eyebrows:

Do you ever go to Dresser, WI they have monthly trail rides at Trollhaugen during the summer? It's pretty fun I go on Memorial Weekend and then I hit one up later in the summer.

I disagree on the mud comments, I mud where i hunt, never seen mud/water inside and i go to the tops of the tires. I just take it to the $5 full auto car wash and let them worry about it, haha!

Some folks confuse mudding or offroading with lack of maintenance - furthest from the truth.

Now, your cvs can get ruined in less than a mile of salty/sandy driving, so just avoid that but I would get it done asap!

To your friends who give you a hard time about driving a Toyota, just compare the average lifespan and repair/service costs of their trucks to the 3rd gen 4runner. Thats all that needs to be said about that.

Ive found there really is a strong mentality of "American made" only in WI. On two or three occasions now Ive been driving down the road, going the speed limit, minding my own business, to suddenly find a hick in a Ford or GM truck fly past me with the middle finger raised for no reason other than that Im driving a Toyota. There is no such thing as a truly american made vehicle any more. Not even close. Every American auto corp uses a plethora of outsourced parts. Several models are manufactured in other countries to save money. Ford, GM, Dodge will pretend its a American pride thing, and people (especially in the mid-west) still buy that mentality. But in the end its all about profit and american autos corps are as greedy as they come and theyll do anything they can to increase profit, including taking jobs from Americans by outsourcing.

Ignore the comments about your age. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders and care enough about maintaining your 4runner. Im 30, and I say have fun being a teenager with a 4runner. But, definitely get rid of the tint on the taillights. Thats dangerous and its only a matter of time before you get ticketed

I said pretty much. There are always a very small percentage that treated their vehicles like angels. I'm friends with several. But it's still a safe statement about teenagers and how they treat their vehicles. I took great care of my first vehicle but I also beat on it mercilessly. Drag racing, rock crawling, mud bogging, burn outs, etc.

Wisco...it's your ride, do with it as you please!!! Mud it, beat it, drive it off a cliff, or through the ocean. Just don't drink and drive or text and drive!

That said, one recommendation I do have as for mods to do in the beginning. If you plan to add armor, or carry lots of cargo with you on your wheelin' trips. Do the tundra brake upgrade. I did it early on, but not until after adding significant weight. Between a lift and weight this will be one of the best and safest mods you can do for yourself and your truck. Keep in mind the stock spare rim will not clear the calipers though, I never saw this in the mod write-ups. Fortunately I found it out at home and not on the trail so taking my rear wheel to the front wasn't such a pain.

Ive noticed that too, I have some friends in Minnesota and I never get any crap for it but all my friends in Wisconsin give me shit.

I took the tail light tint off about a week later, after I had a friend tell me he couldn't see it very well, didn't seem worth the ticket and or insurance if i got in an accident

I didnt get any before pics because i was ridiculously excited and didn't think. But apparently my mom snuck in and took some pictures while me and a couple buddies were working on it! I'll have to ask her for those but until then...


I put the window banner and all the stickers on because I figured if my friends were going to call my car rice, I might as well embrace it.

It took me and my buddies from 4 o clock on saturday to midnight, then from 10 on sunday to about 5 to finish. We ran into a lot of problems with rust on the bolts, also for some reason none of the 12 mil bolts on my car fit on my 12 mil socket, they just round off. So that was an issue. The best part was the rear struts. They were rust bonded at the top and blown as hell, so I just shook them back and forth until the stem broke off, haggard...

It was all of our first time doing any real work on our cars, besides changing oil and plastidipping everything :heh: so it took us longer than most, but the pride we felt afterwards...That made it all worth it.

Yeah dude I go camp there with a group of guys for memorial weekend I took my jeep last year maybe this year I'll take one of my 4runners. It's a lot of fun!

Long time no see

Been awhile since I've updated but here is what I've been up to
1. New cv axles
2. Started building a bumper! I made a cad file and cut it out on the plasma cutter. I bought a harbor freight welder but honestly I don't think its up for the task so I'm going have a friend weld it properly
3. Steering rack bushings

Summer is coming up soon so I have lots of plans to get done while I have time
1. NEW LOWER BALL JOINTS ( I know I should have done this sooner)
2. OTRE
3. Transfer case is leaking so I have to figure that out
4. Valve covers are nasty dirty so find where all the oil is leaking from and fix that
5. Lower control arm bushings
6. Ebay rear control arms and front uppers
7. Tundra brake upgrade
8. TIRES (yay)

If I still have money left after these shenanigans then
1. Rear bumper build
2. Sliders
3. Skid plates

Everyone keeps telling me to do waterpump but my grandparents had it done with the timing belt at 115k

I'm guessing I will run out of money/motivation around number 4 on the first list but at least I will get the important stuff done!

Any other really important maintenance items that people can recommend for me?

EDIT: Im not sure if the bumper file I made is going to work good yet but if it does I will be giving it away to anyone who asks! just shoot me a pm
