Designing a custom front bumper

I've been debating what mounting solution would be best for my off road lights. and would make the front of my car like a tank. and I like the idea of a steel bumper but at the same time I don't like the price lol

only alternative... make my own. I work at a hanger building rockets and we have a Mig welder, which I am fairly proficient with, so I figure I can build a front bumper.

As of right now I'm planning on using 1/8 inch steel plating. i think that should be a good thickness. anybody who has made a bumper them self have anything to input.

Also not pictured will be a round LED turn signal on the corners and on the flat face will be holes for the oem fogs(just because I love projectors, and I spent time modifying them to HIDs

wow That looks pretty dang good! it kind of reminds me of the newer FJ plate bumpers. good luck man if you end up going with it.
 
that bumper has a big face, i think you will lose a lot ground clearance with that, now if you kept the top flat basically flipping your top slopes on the side to a bottom slope up it would work a lot better... just my opinion

despite how it looks it shouldnt be that bad. the oem bumper sticks out 1.5 inches further. and hangs 2.5 inches lower. ill admit it definitely isn't set up for as much clearance as possible but it is still an improvement over oem and will provide me with a light mounting surface as well as provide a mounting point for my CB

i made the draft in solidworks and as for it being for sale sorry it isnt it will be a 1 off
 
After a weekend of working on the bumper this is where I'm at. the mounts for the entire bumper are in place as well as a couple of the panels.

Na I don't think i'm going to put a winch plate on it.

As for cost so far i spend $100.xx on metal which up til now is 2: 10" by 6', 1/8 thick 2: 6" by 6" 1/4 thick and 5' of 1" by 1" square tube 1/8 walls I don't think I have enough to finish so I will have to go and get another 10" by 6' which is about 30$ so and I will definitely have some left over. so over all its looking like its going to cost around $130 total. The price is mainly why I did it my self. I realized how cheap the metal is and most of the price comes from the labor, which I don't mind doing. I'm assuming that a company like ARB has their own supplier and it probably only costs them 60$ or less in materials per bumper.
 
How are you cutting it? I've played with idea in my head, but without having something to cut nice straight lines I figure it'd come out crappy if I tried it.
 
Looks like you need to add some bends so it better follows the lines of the front of the truck.

I always wonder how these bumpers affect radiator performance. Most of the radiator is behind the bumper.
