Desperate man here. Engine sounds like it wants to kill me after TB change (video)

First off I apologize for blowing this forum up lately.

So I spent the last 3 days changing out my timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc. I followed the manual as well as a few write ups in this forum. Everything seemed to go well until I started it up last night. It was extremely loud, like it was idling in the 5,000's, and made a ruhruhruhruhruhruh noise. This morning I went to verify that the timing was still on, and from what I can tell it is. I took some pics....is there something obvious I'm missing with the timing? I might try and get a video of it and post that as well. Can I fire her up without the fan on, as long as the pulley is still bolted down?

I have no clue what to do next, and any and all advice would be greatly appreciated

Quick Google search shows several people with a similar issues (your idle is higher), but I only saw two with clear resolutions. One guy had to drive his for a few days and it went back to normal, the result of the computer taking a while to relearn everything. Another fellow had to replace his engine coolant temperature sensor. Some other suggestion by other folks were to clean the IAC, make sure you didn't damage any sensors and/or their wires, check for vacuum leaks, and make sure your throttle body is closing as it should.

Thanks for responding so quickly corndog. So I just restarted it after looking everything over and while it seemed to idle a little high at start-up, it quickly went back to normal. However, there was a very loud clicking noise, as if something was rubbing. I think I'm gonna have to just pull it apart and make sure I tightened everything properly. Here's a video of it running, any idea what could be the culprit. And sorry for the shakiness of the video!

This happen to me too when I did my timing belt but it was not as extreme as your case. My 4runner just idle at close to 2000 rpm for about 5 day to a week then it corrected itself

That sounds dubious. I know you are just saying what they did but I don't think just driving it is a legit plan.

IMO the T-sensor should always be replaced when doing the timing belt or water pump, even if it is not that old. It is a cheap part and they can be finiky when removed from the engine and put back in.

OP you should list your city and current odometer mileage for reference. Perhaps there is a T4R guy just down the street who can help ... I've seen it before.

Where abouts are you in the Denver area? When I did my t-belt, all was just fine on first startup. I'd be willing to try and take a look though. 2 heads are normally better than 1, but you never know. LOL

Agree, but it seems like letting it run a bit may have 'fixed' the idle issue?

As for the noise, since you're probably going to have to dig back into it, maybe try removing all those belts that are visible in your video. Don't let it run for long without the water pump spinning, just run it long enough so that you can determine whether or not the noise is with the pump/accessories, or something to do with the timing belt. If the noise disappears, start putting belts back one at a time. Did you run the water pump dry at all?

First off, thanks to all of you for your help. Second off.....I'm a jackass. So I pulled the drive belts off and started it up and everything sounded perfect. Put the fan and belts back on and the same noise was back. After looking at it for about 2 seconds, I realized that I had connected the hose that goes from the block to the radiator backwards. The slight difference in length on each side was causing it rub against the tip of the fan blades. I feel like an idiot, but I'm excited that it's over and that it all worked! First time ever doing something that involved to a car, and I'm feeling pretty triumphant right now. Thanks again for your help everyone!

Hey, if that's the only thing you did wrong on your first TB, you have nothing to be ashamed of. I left something off (I forget what it was), and had to do almost the whole thing over. Congratulations!

EDIT: It was that ring on the back of the crank timing sprocket.

I'm confused, in your video you don't have the fan on so what was making the noise then?

That's a hell of a point kball. After I shot this video I removed the drive belts and started it up...no noise. When I reassembled everything, there was a similar noise, but I could see the hose rubbing up against the belt. So it was definitely something else the first go around...possibly the drive belts being too tight? Either way, I'm really happy it's all over with. And Little Caeser, I definitely polished off a few homebrews after this was done!
