Destination / Trail Recommendations in SoCal and Nevada?

Hey guys,
I'm going to take a little trip over the holidays and I'd like to do some light offroading and camping. Probably a week.

I was thinking of going to Joshua Tree and maybe check this out semi near Las Vegas: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/06/m...f2c266e591&ex=1265432400&partner=rssuserland&

Anyone have any specific suggestions? I'll be leaving from San Francisco in a '13 4rTE

I'll suggest heading East from SF then S. down hwy395 thru the E. Sierras. Bodie, Mono Lake area has lots of fire road wheeling and camping anywhere you like. Then thru the remote dirt roads of Death Valley south to Ridgecrest then off toward Dumont Dunes, thru Apple Valley to J. Tree.

Sounds fun to me

I totally agree with zidaro on the whole Eastern Sierras thing. That's some beautiful country! Be ready for the cold if you decide to camp. Gettin down to the mid-twenties at night this time of year.

I would strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this book by Charles Wells. Lots of really good trails in there. There's also one for Southern California.

The road to Bodie, Benton, and the 3 High Sierra passes are closed...but that won't stop a 4runner right? I like the idea of cruising down 395, I do it all the time, but I would save most of the off-road stuff for the So-Cal area. Mojave and Death Valley for sure sound good.

yes, no trans-Sierra passes will be crossed till Spring! Foot of fresh on my driveway this eve.
But if you are traveling down 395, most everything East of the Highway is generally accessible.
If it has snow on it, use your judgement and if your new to wheeling stay on plowed roads.
High Deserts are perfect right now thru May.
