Detailed 1866 Mile Road Trip MPG Log

Hey everyone,

I have done a few MPG posts over the years and wanted to give an update on my setup and what kind of MPG I averaged on a road trip across Texas. Keep in mind the truck was loaded down with two adults and another 400 lbs of gear.

Original equipment:

-1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 4WD with 15" P225/75R15
-4.10 gearing from factory I believe.


Current setup:

-Trailfinder A/T by Discount Tire 265/75R16 tires on 16" factory 5 star wheels
-Moog springs 81401 and 81088
-KYB gas a just shock kit
-Sway bar bushings
-Synthetic fluids all around

Besides this, the truck is stock. The numbers I list are being increased by 11.9% due to the difference between factory odometer/wheel sensor calibration and my current tire size. These numbers were hand calculated at every fill up.

Nope I am really traveling 11.9% further than the speedometer says I have. So I have taken that into account.

I am happy that it has helped you. This Moog/kyb set up makes it about the same height as the 99 tall springs. Definitely was a bit of a lift over my sagging stock springs haha.

Finally a well documented and adjusted report I log every tank with Fuelly app on phone.

Interesting that your adjustment is 11.9%. Seems big. I’m on same tire size on Falken Wildpeaks. Just yesterday returned from 2,000 mile trip. Did the same thing. I checked adjustment over 100 miles on the mile marker posts and my odometer was 5.4% difference. My speedometer is only about 2-3 mph light on highway.

One thing I learned this trip was our tanks are 18.5 gallons but my light goes on after burning 14.5 gallons on highway. One tank I went 45 miles past the fuel light, gauge went FLAT bottom for awhile lol and I pumped 17.0 in. But I squeezed 300 out of the tank.

How do you keep your foot off the gas like that? Speed is a major factor in mileage. Over 80 mph avg I would get 17mpg and mid 70s I would get 19mpg. If I could stay 70 mph is 21mpg. I’m lifted 2”, roof bars, ac on, manual trans and electric fan does not run on highway. Fan delete picked up nearly 2mpg on hwy.

That is very interesting that you were able to get that far after the fuel light came on haha.

Well the main reason my MPH wasn't very high was due a good bit of the trip was in New Mexico which had a lot of 65 MPH speed limit roads. The other reason I don't usually go faster than 70 is because the slug seems to be working pretty hard after 75 MPH!

Cruise control (on flat-ish ground) works wonders. Set it and forget it. Enjoy the right (or second from right) lane. It is very rare I go above 70mph in my 4Runner.

I also run the same size tire on a truck originally with the 225/75-15 tires and use a 12% correction to adjust my speedo/odo with a Dakota Digital speedometer calibrator. No need for adjustment when calculating mileage, etc. that way...

That's pretty good. I've been getting about the same with 265/75/16 and an ICON lift.

I’ll share a separate project thread soon after I finish interface, but essentially a variable electric fan that reads engine temps and for ac I put a sensor on condenser temp so it only runs for ac when needed and only how much needed (not on highway).
