Diagnose & Repair Steering Play/Rattle

Hi all!

I am about to do this however I'm a little confused?!? Hope this isn't a dumb question that I will regret later but..."how do you remove those springs"? I have always just grabbed the ends of springs with vice grips and been done with it. That ain't happening here. Is there a tool I need to buy?

Thanks

Figured it to. Needle nose vice grips!

Anyway, I want to report a problem I had when I performed this fix. When installing the shaft after the fix, I had HUGE issues getting the shaft to go back in the spline. Seems that the rubber bushing at the end of the 3rd shaft "connected to the steering rack" is very soft and pliable so every time I would line everything up and try to push the spline into the secondary shaft I couldn't get it to go all the way in. The fix included taking the little "tit" looking thing off behind the brake and gas pedal so that I could grab the secondary shaft and work it in. I also had to disconnect the mushy bushing on the 3rd shaft attached to the rack. Pain in the F*^#*^g ass!

So how does it feel!?! Like a new car! I cannot believe what a difference this makes. I don't know if I'm just so used to the sloppy steering it had before but I could swear that it's almost "to stiff"?!?

If anyone else experienced this...do tell!

If you read the whole thread on TTORA you will find that a few people had it come out too stiff. It should loosen up after time. I did this to my tacoma and it worked great!

Yea I saw that on the forum. It seems that the guys who had this problem never responded back on a fix. I'm wondering if the shaft is binding at the u joint since I had to disconnect the shaft at the rack unit and I don't think I got the shaft spline to go deep enough into the joint at the rack?!?

I'll post a picture later today.

Pretty sure having this issue on my 04 v8 4th gen. Wondering if the steering shaft is the same as it is on the Taco and 3rd gen 4runner. Can anybody confirm this at all?

Thanks,

Today I did the steering column fix with a roll pin. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

This took all the slop out of my steering, no more dead spot right in the middle where it is unresponsive and it took the clunking/rattle noise that I would get driving over rough sections of road. Can't wait to get it out on a dirt road and feel the difference.

My only regret is not doing this when I first got the truck. Total time was just under 2 hours from grabbing the screwdriver to having all the tools up. I spent probably 20 minutes messing with the stupid clamshell over the steering column because it wouldn't let go and I didn't want to break it. I also ate a bowl of cereal after disconnecting the battery just to make sure there was nothing residual left in the system before I unplugged the airbag.

The roll pin I used was 3/16" and 1.5" long. For the drilling I started with a brand new 11/64" bit and drilled all the way through. Then went through with the 3/16" bit, also brand new. Then just pound the pin in, I used my roll pin punches, and reassemble. For reassembly I recommend connecting the lower joint that comes from the rack first as this will help keep everything in place as you try and line up the two upper allen bolts.

Also to make sure I got the column into the right position on the joint from the rack I marked not only the rotation of it, but also how far in it was. The rotation can't really adjust though because it is keyed.

As for the safety feature being "disabled" I'm not worried about it. The roll pin would have to be stronger than all the bolts holding the steering column in and the air bag should also be keeping you away from the steering wheel. I never intend to find out though...

Posting this in both threads on this fix on the forum, just incase someone only reads one thread...

Just performed this "mod" however now my alignment or steering wheel is way off because I didn't insert the shaft correctly. However, I took it in today to get an alignment. Wil the alignment fix this or will I have to redo it and have to put it in perfectly? Does that make sense?

How far is way off? You can't put the steering column in off because it is keyed.

As in my steering wheel does not corilate with the direction of my tires. As if the alignment is off. My tires are straight forward but my steering wheel is at 10'clock

I'm not sure about that. The bolt seems to go beside the shaft not into it. I put mine back together and the steering wheel alignment is slightly off. I'm going to try shifting it over 1 tooth

I just did this "mod" 2 weeks ago. I had about 1" play in my steering. On the highway it felt very unsafe, as if the truck was gunna get away from me. I put 2 tack welds on the slip joint. solved the play issue 99% for me. Steering is tight. I would definitely recommend using the vice grip needle nose for sure. The tilt springs were a bit of a PITA for me to come off.

has anyone got find the solution for the vibration at the steering wheel at 60-70mph? mine only vibrate at those speed.

Was this a good size roll pin? Did you have to cut and grind any?

This may be a dumb question, but would it be possible to stick the male end in a vise and crimp it down slightly to take up slack in the slip joint?

Just tack weld it. It made a world of difference in mine. Went from hating driving it to absolutely loving it.

Does anyone know any SoCal places that will help me with this mod? I have extremely bad play in my steering wheel. I took it to Toyota for them to check it all my suspension and steering components underneath and they said all was good. The car is pretty scary to drive on the highway and wants to go in every direction - especially when braking.

The Truck Shop in San Diego best place in Socal! James hands down knows his stuff and runs honest shop with fair prices. Him and his team are the best. I was referred to him and will not let anyone touch my truck but him and his team.

Has anyone had the list of problems WITHOUT the noise/rattle? mine feels loose on the highway, wanders, moves roughly over bumps (moves side to side), etc. but I do not have any noise...

Great mod, those springs are a nightmare though. Glad I found this thread.

My crappy weld broke, time to do it again but have a “real” welder do it this time
