Did all 2002 4Runners come with keyless entry?

I bought mine last year, and it only had a single key. I figured being a 2002 it would be a chip key so it was a pleasant surprise when I could copy the key for just a few bucks.

Anyway, I'd like to get a remote for it. Which should be simple if it came with one originally, but the standard key makes me wonder if remotes were standard equipment or not.

It's an '02 Sport edition, if that matters.

Chipped keys and keyless entry do not have to go together. My '99 has regular keys and keyless entry.

See if you have the chirper thingy on the passenger fenderwall way back in the corner by the firewall. If you have a chirper, you have keyless entry. No chirper, no keyless.

You should check under the drivers seat... If it has key less entry you should have the receiver under the drivers seat. Some people have it under the drivers seat and under the carpet.

I found mine under there and had to cut the carpet to get access to the receiver box. Mine was a 98 but I think it's the same thing, and you can find the remote on eBay personally I used a seller named ezautoremote, he was the only guy that had the remote for a 98 and he sells all sorts of remotes, a 02 should be easier to find. And hell include instructions on how to program it. Oh and by the way he sells legit Toyota remotes don't buy Amazon ones, they suck and most of the time you can't program them.

P.S if you want blank Toyota keys to match you can buy those on Amazon for $5

My 02 came with an aftermarket alarm when I bought it. Keys are just simple no chip. I'm guessing it never had a keyless entry from the factory.

If it's a 2002, dimes to donuts, you'll have a keyless entry. If memory serves, the Sport Edition came with a fob for lock/unlock only. The Limited came with chipped keys and an engine immobilizer/theft-deterrent system.

This is incorrect. The box is for the alarm. If no alarm, the receiver for the factory keyless entry is built into the Back-door ECU and the logic part is in the Body ECU. The ONLY physical evidence you will see if there is no alarm is the 'chirper' I referred to in my post above. Period. I have keyless entry, no alarm and nothing under the seat.

'98 was different. The factory keyless entry with no alarm started in 1999. In '98, no alarm, no box, no keyless entry.

The other thing the OP can do is try to put the system in programming mode and see if it responds. You don't need the remote to get that far.

Thanks Durk, that's what I wanted to do, visually verify I had the system before getting a fob. I do indeed have the chirper.

I figured it was probably a safe bet that an '02 had it, but you never know.

Cool. I'd still try to get the system to respond using the link I posted before buying a fob. That way you know the system is working and ready to program. Just go ahead and erase all fobs; you can only program four fobs so it is better to start from zero. Use the REWRITE mode.

These can be a pain to program. Keep trying.

I tried once on my '99 with a junkyard fob, and was denied.

Then I saw a different set of instructions here somewhere and tried it again a week later. Tried, tried, tried, no luck. Did the total reset, and then tried to add the fob. Denied, denied, denied, worked.

Not sure what, if anything, I did the time that worked, vs. all the times it didn't. It's been working fine ever since.

I have a 2001 SR5 and it has keyless entry although didn't come with the remote from the place I got it from.

After checking under the steering wheel I saw a "Viper Remotestart" box as well. I'd like to get it working but it seems like a pain in the ass to even work with so I'll just not mess with it. Doesn't effect any other functionality so no reason to.

Well, after you try a bunch of times at least.

I wouldn't have bothered but I found a keyfob in a pick-n-pull 4Runner.

I guess you can have up to 5 fobs 'married' to the car at a time.

According to the Toyota sales brochure for 2002, both the SR5 and LTD models had keyless entry.
