Well people who have the money will pay the prices.
I don't even bother with kbb any more it's useless. I paid 10k for my 2000 last year, of course it was a 5 speed and had some goodies on it, but it was also realativly low mileage car as well. IDK I wouldn't give them 15K for it, but I am also not in the market for a new 3rd gen.

I saw stuff like this when I was looking for my 3rd gen[emoji23] a guy wanted 16k for his 99 with over 200k miles.... It was lifted and absolutely gorgeous but wasn't worth a penny over 8k. These things are absolutely cherished by their owners so they want top dollar for them!

Maybe I'm funny but I don't like seeing vehicles that old with that low of miles. Means they weren't driven very much. Seals go dry when they sit, moisture accumulates in the motor. Just not healthy for a vehicle to sit that much. The miles average out to 3331 a year. Hardly even an oil change. I'd rather see an 18 year old vehicle with a 180k on it. At least it was driven and regular (usually) fluid changes were done on it.
And none of that even matters because at the end of the day it's still an 18 year old mass produced vehicle that literally hundreds of thousands were sold from 96-02 and hundreds of thousands of are still on the road today. This isn't a classic like a limited production Hemi Cuda or something.

That is not a primo 4runner, so I do think his price is high, and the mileage is low, but not crazy low. It's not a LTD, not locked, not fat lip bumper, not leather, not a value increasing color (no insult to anyone who likes this color...), chromed, 6-spoke wheels, etc., so that's why I say the price is a bit high.
That said, his price isn't THAT crazy. If this was a fully loaded, fully stock 4runner, I'd say the price is about right. But it does have some key features, 4WD, sun roof, and those are the 2 biggest for value add IMO.
Anyway, if it were Cali, I'd think he'd sell it without too much trouble, but in CO, might be a bit tougher. CO is a good market for these, but I don't think it's as good a market for the "high end" of these 4runners. At least not as good as Cali is.
If he's willing to sit on it and wait for the right buyer, then more power to him. No surprise if his rig is not worth the money he's asking to anyone here. This forum attracts do-it-yourself-ers, not people who take it to a dealer for oil changes.

Someone will be willing to pay that money. There is obviously a demand for these and they are not getting any newer. KBB is pretty much useless as stated before. I'd deal with a few dried gaskets over torn up seats and misc rattles that form in a vehicle over the course of nearly 20 years ANY day. That is assuming the seals are even bad, I would not be guessing unless I see it in person. It seems like every time a low mile specimen pops up, everyone starts assuming it's bull without looking at any factual evidence.

Those issues happen because the car is 20 years old. Not because is has low mileage. Might have some clean seats but for $16k, yea right.
I could buy a clean one for 5k, lift, paint, supercharge, new reman motor rewrap interior, and it would be way better than that vehicle.

Debatable. Some people want an untouched and totally stock 3rd gen, they are a pretty good all-rounder when they are stock. I'd prefer getting leather, locker, and 5-speed for that price. Assuming that this one drives like a fresh 3rd gen, this guy will get his money and a guy with the dough will have a nice 3rd gen to add to his collection.

I thought that too, but after hearing stories from my sister (she's a financial advisor for very wealthy people out in LA) about them calling her to ask if they can buy a ferrari they saw on the lot as they passed by, or other more crazy junk like that, I don't believe that anymore. Some of them are self-made millionaires, and can make money at will, but they don't have great self control in personal finances and they just hire someone to manage all that and keep them personally solvent.
It's a weird phenomenon, but it keeps my sis in the good life...
Yeah, I had to give him props for his simple response to his detractors... "I may have to wait a while, but I will get that price for it." Period. Done. I got nothing to say to that.
You could of course. But you would never buy this. The guy that buys this will be someone who loves this specific vehicle for some reason (maybe had one as a teen, and now a made-man with enough money that we won't miss $16k that much) and wants to buy one new, but obviously can't. For him, this is a good deal because he isn't a car guy and doesn't want/can't spend the time or have the knowledge to do the work himself. All the work you describe at a shop would be pushing the total investment over his asking price.
