I had a 5th Gen TRD Sport Double cab Long Bed. It was great but like my 4Runner a lot more. I feel like I can do more with it except for move other people's furniture which I'm ok with.

Okay... in all seriousness, here is why I got rid of my Tacomas and went full 4R...
1: Features...
I am talking about auto up/down on all windows, power rear window, sunroof (wasn't available on my 2nd Gen Tacomas), crawl control (same here), reclining rear seats, and air conditioned cargo area for the mutt. You could add optional 3rd Row and AWD (Limited), but I got neither of these.
2: Parking (shorter vehicle)
3: Roof Storage (without getting a separate bed canopy)
4: No one asks to borrow my 4Runner to move their sh...shtuff. :thumb:
5: Better Fuel Economy
This one doesn't matter to most people, but I drive more than the average bear... or human... or super human... I am getting much better fuel economy out of 2016 4Runner TEP than I got out of my 2007 PreRunner 2WD 2.7L Manual. It isn't just the drivetrain. I am getting better fuel economy out of my 2016 than I got out of my 2003 (4-Speed Auto).
6: Kid-ability - have spawn. will travel.
...I am sure I can think of some more, but those were my main reasons. I LOVED my Tacomas. I miss them from time to time. They were super reliable and fun to drive.
I just love my 4Runner more.

3rd row and the wife wanted a closed cargo area. I use a trailer for toys and other stuff. The new Tacoma is a new design and I am not really a fan of first years.

I did, and had a DCSB TRDOR on order... then I put my family in one and there was no comparison on cabin space and comfort, but we're a relatively tall family. Plus with the price increase on the Taco by the time you get a fully-loaded Taco you're in 4R pricing anyway.

If I could have saved $5k or so, I would have looked at them more past pricing them out online with same features. My wife wanted an SUV for the dry cargo storage as well, but I could have convinced her if I put a bed topper on it...but too much cash in the end.
And I have a full size as it is, didn't need another.
I also personally think the new tacos don't look as good either.

I had a 2013 DCSB Off Road. Great truck, but I like the 4Runner much better for reasons pretty much all listed already.
The "cargo" I typically had in the Tacoma bed most of the time was stuff you'd rather have inside. (Think luggage) I started with a soft bed cover, then got a great deal on a hard cover.....neither of which were ideal. Both leaked some amount of rain no matter how much weatherstripping I added.
Also, the short bed is really too small to be useful for much of anything.
Even with skiing, my 4Runner with a Yakima Skybox works better. Sure it's easier to toss the skis in the bed of the Tacoma, but with a family of 4 in the truck, all your other gear has to go in the bed too. Much rather put the soft gear in the back of the 4Runner and the skis / poles / snowboards up in the box.

yes and no. Tacomas are riddled with small annoyances that add up. to get a Tacoma comparable to my 4Runner, i'd be looking at $38k, and a 3rd gen.
I say this having owned 2 2nd gens (2008 and 2015, both TRD OR), and too much time test driving 3rd gens. i loved those trucks. but, admittedly, it was quite annoying getting into the 2015 and not having the creature comforts my wife's 2008 Camry had.
i'd rather have a Tacoma, but 4Runners make better family vehicles for obvious reasons. and the interior quality seems much better.

For me - the interior was not good enough. You can't get a power seat - at all - in any model of tacoma. I don't need power seats, but at least a height adjustment. I've owned 4 different tacomas and minitrucks over the years. The '16 tacoma is basically the same thing. The seating is not very comfortable for me. And the interior layout and space is a good bit smaller. I put aftermarket seats in all of them. I've found Honda and Subaru seats to be physically small enough yet comfortable for me. In my Fj40 I have Honda prelude seats. I like my 4runner seats, but do wish there was another inch of seat height drop.
If there was a 4runner size and design interior with a small bed - I might be a buyer. I don't think the current Tacoma is as good as it needs to be to get me to jump. If I was going to buy another truck I'd either find a 4door 1st gen tacoma for the smaller size overall, or I'd buy a 1st gen Tundra. They're the same size as a current Tacoma, have a small v8, and nicer interior.

Pretty sure 90% of us considered a Tacoma and the 4Runner won. I considered one and determined the only practical thing the Tacoma could haul that a 4Runner could not is a full size refrigerator or a tall piece of furniture standing upright. For that rare instance, or for when I need to haul bulk rock or dirt I will just rent a open trailer for $20.
