Did you consider a Tacoma?

This was my thought process as well. After a series of BOF SUVs, this time around I thought maybe a Tacoma would be more practical - keep my people and gear separate. I drove the Tacoma and then the 5th gen and immediately remembered why I love the 4Runner.
I can rent or borrow a trailer or a truck if I ever need it.

My brother-in-law got a 16' double cab TRD-off road that I rode in recently. I liked it a lot, it was surprisingly quiet and felt solid, though more utilitarian. But, I'll take my cargo area encapsulated any day of the week. There are times I wish I had a bed, but they're few and far between.
Some things I want to see the new 4R adopt from the new Tacoma:
- Nav/Radio with buttons integrated onto the screen rather than being part of the dash.
- Multi information display that resembles a PS4 when compared to our 4R's that's more like Nintendo's original Game Boy.

The two biggest issues for me is that the 5th Gen is missing an 8cyl and/or a manual trans option. Granted the Taco doesn't offer an 8cyl but it does offer a M/T. A 5th Gen 6cyl M/T would be sweet because it's a bad ass looking truck. I have dogs so I'd probably take the 4Runner but seriously consider a low mileage (09 maybe) 4th Gen 8cyl or Lexus.

My best friend has a 2016 TRD Off-Road with a 6 speed manual... dash looks like 2016 where my 2015 4Runner's MID looks like 1991. :twitch:

Test drove a dclb trd sport. That new 3.5 was like a bumble bee under the hood.
4Runner interior was World's better. Infotainment on taco was nicer but that's it.
Once I level my 4Runner and put better tires on it I'll be happier.

I had a helluva time deciding between the two. I was finding it hard to swallow the price of a fully loaded TRD Off Road Double Cab. Price difference between that and my Pro was negligible. Then, I thought of all the people that would be ringing my phone needing me to move shit for them with my new truck. Glad I went with the 4Runner. Wife, also likes the SUV better.

I actually ordered a 2016 TRD Off Road Tacoma Double-Cab, Long Bed 6AT in Quicksand, and waited for 3-months. The dealer received it in, and marked up the price $4K and told me take it or leave it. I left it, wrote a stern letter to Toyota Corp. and was offered a '16 TRD PRO 4runner at Sticker that was en-route to another dealership. I, of course, purchased it, and have never looked back.
Toyota of Orange, California is the biggest group of scammers and unprofessional idiots I've ever dealt with in all my years of buying vehicles. Thankful Toyota Corp. made up for it and Rancho Margarita was a breeze to work with.

In all seriousness, the back of the Tacoma bounced around a lot. Plus all you can find by way of 4x4 Tacomas in FL are white work trucks. The TRD shits are vaporware.
Getting into the T4R made me feel like a civilized person again - until the wheels wouldn't balance.

When I need a bed...
For hauling dirt and stuff - the Home Depot dump trailers are pretty darn handy for $75. I wish they'd rent the little mini skid steer as a combo with the dump trailer. Renting both requires a lot of shuttling to go get the skid steer, drop it off, go back and get dump trailer, use it, then return all of it. But for my small yard it's the perfect size of equipment to fit through the gates and play pretend dirt worker. This is one time I do wish for more is towing capacity. The little dumper only holds about 3500lbs, and they won't let me rent a 10k lb trailer. I can always borrow my parents 3/4 ton but it's a long way to drive to get it, so unless I really need it for a bunch of heavy work, the 4runner gets the job done.

Yes and no. Had an 01 Taco and loved it. Replaced it with another truck that I also enjoyed. Expected to get back into the Tacoma when it was eventually replaced.
Then I needed 6 seat belts and a 3rd row so the Tacoma was not an option. Never considered any kind of SUV before; very happy with my 4Runner.
Came from a 2nd gen tacoma.
I disagree with "getting more for your money" with a taco. I definetely got WAY more for my money with a 4R. Theres def pros and cons of owning a pickup vs SUV but i think the pros outweigh the cons (atleast in my situation):
Tacoma Pro's:
-Pickup so you got the open bed to throw whatever you want back there like wet snowboards, dirty shoes, muddy equipment etc without a care in the world.
-Easy to buy and move furniture or large items
-DCSB = longer wheelbase than 4R
Cons:
-It's a pickup. Welcome to the neighborhood UHAUL club. Everyone needs you when its time to move.
-Cheaper interior
-Weak sound deadening
-Smaller cabin
-NO trunk
-Once you start adding bed racks and crossbars you basically lose the whole point of a pickup truck IMO and basically have an exposed trunk.
4R Pros:
-A TRUNK
-Passenger friendly both front and rear
-full sized roof rack compatible
-Nicer interior
-Better sound deadening
-Limited production vs Taco (Minus TRD Pro)
-Looks better and classier than a pickup truck (opinion)
-Has better usable power on a day to day basis

I was originally looking at getting the latest Tacoma TRD OR for months. I hadn't had a truck in a while and realized it was one of my favorite vehicles. I do a lot of cycling and figured the truck bed would come in handy, though I would be getting a topper as I like the option for secured out of the weather storage.
The T4R hadn't even crossed my radar at this point and I began cruising the dealerships looking at Tacoma's when I noticed a Trail Edition T4R and really liked it! At this point I still didn't think it would work for me and my bikes when out of the blue I ran into a buddy w/ a 5th gen runner with his MTB in the back:bravo:
At this point I decided to drive them both, and long story short, I liked the 4Runner much better! I felt crammed in the new Tacoma (6'1") as the seat height is too high, roof too low, dash too close, etc. Engine seemed nice but the 6sp auto sucked. Suspension on the TRD OR Tacoma seemed better than the TEP I drove, but not by enough to sway me from the T4R. I did drive a TEP w/ and w/o KDSS and there wasn't enough of a difference on the test drive to make it a can't live w/o option.
So, after all of that I find myself with an order for a 17, cement, T4R TRD Pro. Figured I'd might as well try my luck at getting one as it really has everything I like, and if for some reason I find that it's not for me, the resale is so remarkable that I really didn't have anything to lose:dancin:

Taco was never an option for me. If I was getting a truck it has a V8 requirement. I can live with an SUV that has a V6 for towing on occasion, but I don't plan on keeping the 4Runner as long as I would keep a real truck. If I was buying a truck it has to last 20+ years down the road, which means it should haul bigger toys than I currently have!

I waited for the 16's to hit the dealers in October of 2015, test drove one the day they arrived. It had a weird buzzy vibration that seemed like it would get annoying. Checked out the forums, others were feeling it as well. Waited until they resolved the vibration... 6 months of waiting later, test drove a 4runner and bought one. Japanese build quality vs Mexican build quality, proven engine/transmission, much nicer interior, WAY better seats, and none of the other issues the Taco has been leaving the factory with.
They still haven't fixed the vibration...

Same. I traded in a Raptor because it was completely unnecessary as a daily, and test drove the Tundra TRD. Decided that V8 was far too weak and test drove the 4Runner. My fiancee and I both loved the pep in the V6 and took the only white one on the lot, and happened to be a Trail Edition. I've never been happier to have come over to Toyota.
