Diesel Conversion

I am sure some of you all have seen this website, Toyota
but you can get a turnkey diesel conversion for our 4Runners for only $22,500! I love how they mention that many of their customers do this for better fuel mileage and lower operating costs for their daily driver. At that price it would take you about a million miles of driving to save the same amount running diesel vs gas. I assume you would also void every warranty and service agreement you have. Its pretty cool, but unfortunately unreasonable.

My co worker has an old land rover that his family drives all over the world in. They went down to south America and the gas engine blew. He had it converted from right hand to left hand drive and a diesel put in. It cost him $5000. The same conversion up here was close to $15000.

What's the 4runner equivalent in the rest of the world? I'm sure you could find a wrecked one and have it shipped here for parts.

I know a few guys who used to do this for early 90's vw golfs. In Europe you could get the awd rallye ( yes that's the spelling) golf. You find a wrecked one, have it shipped over. The north American version uses the same unibody and all the attachment points are in place, so it's pretty much a bolt on, you still need to source out some parts as wrecked ones have damaged parts.

If you were handy I bet you could do this yourself for way under. Not sure how inspection would go. Up here we don't have aircare and all that so you can pretty much do as you want, well no aircare in my city anyway.

^That is a pretty sweet video of that Prado! Back to the original topic...I don't know the torque numbers of the diesel they would put in a 4Runner, but are the transmission and other drivetrain components strong enough to deal with the torque of a deisel?

From the toyota.au site, it looks like the same transmission. The 3 liter diesel has these specs:
170 HP
302 TQ
