Maybe it'd be worth it to me if it had a 1KD, but this 1KZ diesel is lethargic(being nice here, too). You're out 20k on a 4Runner that is slower than a far cheaper V6 and will take a fair bit of driving before you can break even with saving money on fuel due to the economy of the diesel(which isn't that great btw).

Maybe if it was on a trailer being pulled by a brand new Powerstroke. Otherwise, this is similar to a 22RE; zero power but it will never die.

I always notice how guys in the states wish they had the wheezy diesels that guys overseas want to toss out for the petrol engines that the guys in the states aren't satisfied with.

The grass is always greener. But, I can confidently say my 1-HDT pulls like a freight train when compared to my outgoing 5VZFE.
I'll admit tho, I thought this was a D4D swap until it was pointed out they used a 1KZ.

The HD is direct injection, right? Just curious because I can't seem to Google a solid answer. Can it really be compared to a 5VZ when it probably won't even fit into that engine bay?

Yes, DI. What's the length of the 3rd gen bay, from firewall to core support? I'll measure my LC's. I'm fairly certain there's a few straight 6 3rd gen conversions out there of the JZ variety.

Really? I drove one of the 3.0l turbo diesels in Central America several years ago and thought it had noticeable more power driving up and over hills than my 3.4l manual Tacoma.

I could pick one of those up in the UK (admittedly RHD) for about 5000 USD for a really nice one (with the intercooler)!
The 1KZ-TE is a good diesel engine if it has been well looked after, but the high mileage ones tend to crack cylinder heads if the cooling system has not been meticulously maintained. It's a single cam, indirect injection diesel and is pretty heavy on fuel; a generation behind the 3RZ or 5VZ engines.
The 1KD engine has more power than the 1KZ but has something of a reputation for injector problems and holed pistons. I would never use this engine in an expedition vehicle. For me, there has not been a really 'indestructible' Toyota 4 cylinder diesel since the 2L / 3L (I have a 2L in my Hilux), which are great but have very little power in modern terms.
a 1HD-T / 1HD-FT / 1HD-FTE conversion of a 4Runner sounds good, but I think the additional weight of a very heavy 6 cylinder engine and heavier transmission would ruin the lightness of the 4Runner. Better just to buy a Landcruiser.
Personally I passed up loads of diesels and waited for a 3RZ-FE petrol as I specifically wanted a petrol engine. Compared to the diesel it is so muich more refined, quieter, smoother, cleaner and gets better mileage than the 1KZ-TE.
So, $25,000 for that!!!????. With a home-made wiring loom?? What a jackass! I'd look for a diesel LHD Landcruiser Colorado (name for the Prado in Europe), buy and ship it to the US for about a third of that price.
