Diff Lock - Am I an idiot?

interesting.
I don't think ive ever held it, just a quick tap. I will have to try it again and see whats up.

That's how mine works. Just a tap. Maybe it's a 03-05 thing that was changed with the '06 update.

OP, the diff lock freezing up is a fairly common problem on older 4runners where it never gets used. My '06 was frozen when I bought it and took a good 6 months of randomly trying to engage it before it unfroze itself.

I wouldn't count this out as a loss though. I think their price was a bit high. I paid 12k even for my '06 V8 94k miles a year ago.

The service manual says you hold it for 2 seconds, it's not just a tap.

.

Regardless of the manual, the switch clearly tried doing what it was intended to do with just a tap. Tap switch, VSC Off light came on and diff lock light blinked. VSC Off goes away but diff lock never stops blinking.

It says the same in the 2003 and 2004 manuals. Press for 2 seconds to engage. Tapping it may work, it may not. I would be inclined to say that an actuator not used often would require a full 2+ second press of the switch.

Having personally experienced the diff lock stuck on after my wife bump the switch, I tapped repeatedly many times. Once I got into the books and read the 2 second thing, I went out and tried it and the long press worked the first time.

More (it clearly states "press for 2 seconds to turn on the the voltage for 5 seconds):

I'm not saying tapping doesn't work, I'm just saying pressing for 2+ seconds is what the book says.

If tapping works, tap away....
