This isn't from my personal vehicle but one that came into my shop complaining of noise in the rear end. Pretty gnarly. Wound up putting in a whole brand new OEM third member.

Anywhoo figured I'd share. It will possibly make you feel like you're having a better day than this dude.









I scored the e-locker actuator and housing for free. So at least someone is happy!

What causes this sort of carnage? Is it super old diff fluid causing excessive wear over time or is it mainly found in locked axles because of the extra stress?

that first one looks like a pinion spacer issue, like somehow it got crushed and or dammaged thus allowing the pinion gear to make contact with the differential case, and over time yeah boom... that thing had to be making noise for a long time by the looks of the groves in the case... and [MENTION=51127]Dous[/MENTION], that first pic you posted.... well daaayum thats the problem right there barney...

Geeze, obviously a rookie set those gears up.

Everyone knows you need to check the contact pattern between the ring and pinion, AND the contact pattern between the pinion and carrier.

I've only seen this in the 85 pickup I have that had a chevy 4.3L v6 with quite a bit of added hp. The 3rd member (well, 3 of them) just couldn't hold up... Never thought our 3.4 could cause that much havoc.

It's definitely the stress, my therapist told me so it must be true!

Over the years I've seen things that make you wonder how it ever got out of the driveway. Still I broke a spider gear in my LC after 10 yrs of wheeling it. That was an ARB carrier too. Why? Don't know, don't care, I'm 7 yrs in to this set up, wonder if I should expect a failure?
