I just bought a 01 4runner with a bad engine. I have been looking on ebay and other places and they list the 96-00 engine then the 01-02 engine as being different. I thought all 3.4 engines are the same from 96-02. I know the 01-02 have different throttle bodies, but the engines should be the same right? The block and heads are listed the same. Whats different?

thats what I was thinking, I think they are listed that way cause its a violation of federal law to put a older motor in a newer vehicle. I dont know if thats 100% correct when you are replacing the same unit though? Mine still runs on 5 cylinders with a fist sized hole in the block. Really all I need is a short block to fix it....thanks
