They are different. 96-00 I believe had the charcoal canister where he put his fuse block and they also had the abs module on the passenger side by the firewall. 01-02 had the canister back by the tank and combined the master cylinder with the abs module.
However there are several people that have done a setup similar to ripcord's with the older engine bay and he is currently designing one for the older 3rd gens. IIRC it's talked about a good bit in the last few pages of his build thread

Ripcord is currently designing a setup for us that don't have the 01-02 to sell. His thread says it should be out soon.

If you are electrical capable. You can install a aux fuse/relay box in the back under the seat. That's what I did.

I put my fuse box there too! No pictures though... it's not very pretty
All good. I'm sure it's safe.
This is what I did with mine. I ran 5 wires to the back. On the driver side behind the panel. And ran 5 wires in the front through the grommet inside the engine bay.
So with that said. When ever I add a light, or anything that needs power and relay. I simply tap into one of the wires either in the front or the back. The switch power wires are already pre ran to the front under the head unit. So I just install a switch. And boom. All done. No need to run wires, and the whole bs.
Room in a 97? I don't think so. No way could you fit a bracket for a six fuse box.
I have blue sea aux fuse box sitting on top of the OEM fuse box. That's as close as it gets. In my eyes at least.
Another option would be passenger side.
