Differences Between the '10-'13 4Runner and the '14+ 4Runner

I have been reading many threads recently about the 2014 4Runner. It seems many "new" and potential owners think the 2014 4Runner is completely new from the ground up. Nothing could be further from the truth. The 2014 4Runner is basically the same as the 2010-2013 4Runner with some cosmetic changes only! What this means is you new guys can search out any questions you may have because the answers will be the same for your new 4Runner as well as the '10-'13 4Runner.

With that said, there are minor differences between the '10-13 models like the emissions pump, horn, etc but no real changes. Chassis, suspension, fenders, doors, all glass, lift gate, etc are the same! Also there are obvious differences between the SR5, LE and TE models but overall there are not that many differences. I am starting this thread hoping we can list the differences between the '13 model 4Runner and the '14+ model. Forget the trim levels for right now. I do not know all the differences but I know a few so I will start the list and you guys can add to it. I will periodically take your additions and add them to this post.


Differences between the 2013 4Runner and the 2014 4Runner:

I'd like to throw in the '14 tail lights into my '11. With those having LEDs, I'm wondering how much work that will entail on the wiring side. I won't dare to do any electrical mods. I'd end up killing the vehicle somehow lol.

Antenna delete. Not sure if it's incorporated into the blind-spot window or if there's some added defroster there as well but it's clearly different in the 2014s.

The front seat backs are shaped different.

Although the headlights are now projectors, I did confirm that it uses the same bulb numbers as 10'-13'

I have a list of 2013 to 2014 differences, not sure where I got it from, so I'll just copy-paste it here with some adjustments (as we now know some things about which the list was in doubt). Essentially the truck is the same mechanically.

Summary of changes to 2014 4Runner:

SR5/TRAIL

• Projector headlamps in new housings
• New front valence, with repositioned fogs and elimination of lower signals/DRLs.
• New LED tail lamps (filament turn signals; LED side light)
• In-glass antenna
• New 17-inch rims for SR5 and Trail
• New colour-matched side mirrors (on some trims with integrated signals and puddle lights)
• Standard chrome roof rack
• Colour matched overfenders and bumpers (Trail)
• Dark grey/black metallic centre console
• Black and leather steering wheel with new buttons
• Cargo side windows now with defrost
• New colours: Super White; Attitude Black Metallic; Barcelona Red Metallic; and Nautical Blue Metallic
• Soft-touch door trim, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather shift knob
• New Optitron instrument panel that houses speedometer, tachometer, fuel and coolant temperature gauges, plus a multi-information display showing outside temp, time, average fuel/instant economy and other trip stats
• Range and temp in centre stack display now in blue
• More sculpted back to front seats for additional knee space in second row
• Available SofTex seats with coloured stitching (and heat?)
• New dash material above glove box
• Standard eight-way power driver seat (SR5)
• Standard rear-view backup camera
• Standard Entune™ Audio Plus
• Party Mode now linked to Facebook and Twitter accounts to increase tailgate party participation
• Two 12V power outlets in middle console for rear seat passengers

LIMITED, with the above changes, plus:

• 20-inch Limited wheels now black and chrome tuning fork design (instead of chrome/grey)
• Chrome-plated grille insert and chrome front bumper that extends to the fog-lamp bezels
• Ventilated (cooled) driver and front passenger seats in addition to heat
• Seat memory settings
• Front and rear sonar —*plus backup camera
• Entune Premium JBL Audio system

I will also add some stuff missing here:

The brake lines have been stiffened for better brake feel.

There's supposed be a new cross-member somewhere in suspension, but I don't know the details. (added: one review says "For example, crossmember braces were added to improve torsional rigidity and trailer sway control is now available.")

I try to track the year by year changes on my history page (link in sig). Here is some you may want to add. Let me know if this is incorrect as I am not as familiar with the 5th Gens yet...

For second-row passengers, a sculpted front seat-back shape provides additional knee space.

The SR5 adds a standard eight-way power driver seat.

All grades are now standard with a roof rack.

Both the SR5 and Trail grades will ride on 17-inch alloy wheels with a new wheel-design for both

Limited rides on 20-inch alloy wheels which are now painted black prior to machining to add contrast.

Inside, both the SR5 and Trail grade add standard Soft Touch door trim, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather shift knob provide a premium feel and atmosphere.

The Limited comes with new ventilated driver and front passenger seats in Sand Beige, Black and a new Redwood color. Both front seats are now standard with memory settings.

Vortex generator

Not sure if it was mentioned but the '14s got vortex generators.

"The taillights (and side mirrors on some trims) include small air-guiding spines designed to channel air and increase air pressure on the SUV's sides to help with stability at speed. These "vortex generators" are used extensively on the bigger Toyota Tundra pickup trucks, and we expect they'll carryover to Toyota's other SUVs as well. Although we couldn't tell any difference in the performance or handling during our two days with the SUV, we were told the engineers did find fuel-economy or rear-stability improvements in their testing. This new pump is LOUD when you turn off the truck. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner winding down...
