Different airbox mod.

Tried a new airbox modification. Not sure if it's been done, but it worked out great. The design is a little rough, fine tuning later. The result is better throttle response and the cool sound that comes with it. :banana:

I guess I am not sure I follow this. Did you just cut a large square out of the air box? That works I guess but a lot of the reasons that people have been doing to existing air box mod with the deckplate is because they are able to recover the deckplate when needed for water crossing or if they are unhappy with the results. Seems like this is just a variation of an existing mod with permanent results.

I wouldn't be too quick to judge there, gents. There's more there in the pictures than meets the eye, but I can't exactly tell what it is. Looks like some kind of reflective material? OP will have to fill us in.

As for cutting a bigger hole I'd say that's fine if the OP isn't going to be doing any huge water crossing. That's where the Deckplate mod comes into play, really. I did the deckplate mod, but I don't plan on doing any water crossing. I just like the availability in case I need to.

Ya, looks like something is there but I would be shocked if it is water tight. With a deckplate you have to seal it with silicone to me water tight. If the guy likes loud whiny engine noise more power to him.

ma if the op wanted that id of traded him my K&N cold air intake for his stock air box no questions asked, not now though... he just ruined a $460 part on his truck

Yeah, I saw the sheet metal insert closing off the hole. I stand by my statement. There are lots of threads out there where people have dyno'd with and without the deckplate mod, modeled and measured pressures within the intake to try and figure out what kind of flow increase you get with the deckplate, etc etc. While I would call none of them "conclusive", I don't think you gain anything measurable from hacking the whole side of the intake out instead of making a round hole that covers most of that side anyway. At least with the round hole, you can button it up water tight. I don't see that sheet metal in a slot being water tight or more robust than a deckplate.

Novel, but I'd never do it to mine. I see it causing problems and not giving any performance gain (especially over a standard deckplate mod).

I see what is going on here. it is a drop in cover, unlike the screw in deck plate. that is what the slit in the top is for, a drop in door. Think magic trick, cutting girl in half...same idea...good idea?? Does not look very water tight

It is a good concept no doubt. If it is sealed correctly than im sure its a great alternative to the deckplate if you wanted to be different. I doubt that the increased size on that intake door would show a noticable difference on a dyno as compared to a deckplate.

Personally, i would prefer the deckplate simply because i can seal it with threads, and if i wanted to take a step further, seal the thread with teflon and a pipe sealant.

I agree, with most of the comments. After I cut the square out, part of me said, "oh ****". But after creating the slit for a plate, it seems to work fine. Better throttle response. I also plan to remove the silencers.

Personally, I do not plan to drive this 4Runner into a stream or major off-roading. Usually I just camp and do some Astronomy. Thinking about buying a roof tent, but for that cost, I could buy another telescope. :cheers:
